UConn Legend Sue Bird Becomes First WNBA Player To Be Honored With a Statue

UConn Huskies legend and former Seattle Storm star Sue Bird is about to be immortalized in WNBA history with an achievement that’s a first for a WNBA player. On Wednesday, July 2, the Seattle Storm’s social media team posted on their social channels that Bird will be having a statue on the team’s home court, the Climate Pledge Arena, which will be unveiled on August 17, later this year.

This will be the first ever time in history that a WNBA player will have a statue made by their franchise. After a stellar 21-year career with the Storm, it seems as though the team is paying tribute to one of their best players of all time by giving her her very own statue to continue to celebrate her legacy for decades to come.

Before she was drafted by the Storm with the first overall pick in the first round of the 2002 WNBA Draft, Bird was a key cog for coach Geno Auriemma’s Huskies from 1998 to the year she was drafted. There, Bird led the Huskies to two NCAA championships in 2000 and 2002, as well as winning other individual accolades such as the Naismith College Player of the Year award in the latter.

Bird then went on to win four WNBA titles and was selected to be an All-Star 13 times throughout her career in the league, eventually having her No. 10 jersey retired by the Storm.

Sue Bird Stresses That Her Statue Is Made For Everyone, Not Just Her

As Sue Bird’s statue in the Seattle Storm’s arena, the Climate Pledge Arena, is confirmed to be unveiled, the 44-year-old let out a statement through the WNBA team’s official website wherein she says that this achievement was made possible by everyone around her.

“For over two decades, the city of Seattle supported me, both on and off the court. It’s because of this community that Seattle will forever hold a special place in my heart. This statue isn’t just for me, it’s for anyone out there hoping to one day pursue their passions and live out their dreams. I’m thankful to the Storm and Seattle for this honor, and can’t wait to celebrate with my family, friends and our amazing fans this August,” Bird was quoted as saying.

Currently, the 2025 Seattle Storm squad, coached by Noelle Quinn, have churned out a 10-7 overall record thus far and is the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, fifth league-wide.
