Ex-Stanford Star Cameron Brink Gets 100% Real on Recovering From Season-Ending ACL Injury

After missing over a year, LA Sparks star and former Stanford standout Cameron Brink is back in Los Angeles. She was picked No. 2 overall during the 2024 WNBA draft, right behind Caitlin Clark. Brink was supposed to be the team’s “next big thing,” but suffered a season-ending ACL injury last year.

It had been a mentally taxing time for her, as she explained on her podcast, “Straight to Cam,” where she also spoke about how she mentally approached that injury, cheering her teammates on from the bench.

“I came off the bench the first half of my freshman year in college and I actually loved it. It’s kind of nice. You can get a feel for the game. I don’t know why, I just like it. And knowing I’m playing behind D and Azurá, like they’ve got it covered. I’ll come in if you need a break, but otherwise, I’m just going to be clapping my cute little butt off on the bench,” she said. (3:10)

The 23-year-old then talked about how frustrating it is to be on the bench and not being able to do anything. However, she is optimistic that now that she is back, things are gonna change for the better.

“One of the hardest parts when you’re out is just sitting on the bench. You can’t go help up your teammate, or you get a technical foul if you run off the bench. So, it’s nice to actually be out there and feel like you’re of use. I think some of my teammates are like, “Oh yeah, I forgot you could do that,” she said. “10 out of 10. Happy to be back.”

While the injury was frustrating, she was still looking forward to making her mark in the WNBA, as she did with Stanford the last time. As she was injured, she found some time to work on some aspects of her game, and she thanked LA Sparks coach Lynne Roberts for it.

“I love our head coach, Lynne Roberts. She told me to focus on defense, focus on rebounding, and run the floor. She said the shots will find me, and the rest will come. It feels good that your coach gives you that confidence,” she said (3:00)
