Few names in college basketball are generating more buzz than Ashlyn Watkins. At 6’3″, the South Carolina Gamecocks junior forward has become a fan favorite with her dynamic play. But behind every great athlete is a support system that shapes their journey. So, who are the key people behind Watkins’ rise to stardom?

Who are Ashlyn Watkins’ Parents? Take a Look at Her Family
Ashlyn Watkins’ love for basketball started in her hometown of Columbia, South Carolina. Basketball was a family affair, with her father, Vancito Watkins—also 6’3″—playing a major role in introducing her to the sport. Pickup games in the neighborhood were common, with Watkins, her older brother, Tori, and their dad battling it out on the court.
Her mother, Harriet Watkins, recognized her potential early and signed her up for organized basketball in third grade. It didn’t take long for others to notice her talent. During a local rec league game in Columbia, a representative from the South Carolina 76ers AAU team spotted her, opening the door to structured training and higher-level competition.
At just 11, she made headlines by dunking on a nine-foot rim during a game. The moment landed her on ESPN’s SportsCenter and put her on the national radar. Her father promised her $100 if she pulled it off, and she delivered—joining the ranks of women’s basketball icons like Lisa Leslie and Georgeann Wells, known for their dunking achievements.
Watkins’ High School Career
Watkins attended Cardinal-Newman High School in Columbia, where she left a lasting legacy. She led the team to four straight SCISA Class 3A state championships and shattered school records, finishing as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,740 points and top rebounder with 1,341 rebounds, along with 366 blocked shots.
Her senior year in 2021-22 was especially dominant. She averaged 20.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game, earning her national recognition, including a spot as a McDonald’s All-American in 2022.
She also made history by winning the event’s dunk contest, becoming just the third female player to do so, following Candace Parker and Fran Belibi. That same year, she was named South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year.
Watkins Joins Her Hometown Gamecocks
Watkins didn’t slow down when she got to college. She joined a powerhouse South Carolina program and made an immediate impact. As a freshman in 2022-23, she played in 32 games, scored in double figures seven times, and helped the team set multiple program records, including a school-best 36 wins and a trip to the Final Four.
Her sophomore season in 2023-24 was somehow even bigger. She played a key role in the Gamecocks’ undefeated national championship run, contributing to a record-breaking 38-win season. Watkins’ defensive presence was undeniable—she ranked second in the SEC with 2.4 blocks per game and led the nation with a 67.7 defensive rating.
Her shot-blocking skills even earned her the nickname “Ashlyn Swatkins.”

Through it all, Watkins has leaned on the unwavering support of her parents, especially her mother. A single mother of three daughters—Autumn, Alexi, and Ashlyn—Harriet Watkins juggled multiple responsibilities to ensure her children had every opportunity to succeed.
She drove Watkins to practices, games, and tournaments, always by her side through every step of the journey.
Off the court, Watkins is known for her playful, joyful personality—something her mother says has always been part of who she is. As her basketball career continues to rise, that same energy and love for the game will undoubtedly keep fueling her success.
