Sophie Swanson, a standout guard from Purdue, has officially committed to Virginia Tech, bringing her dynamic skill set to the Hokies for the 2025-26 season. During her sophomore campaign with the Boilermakers in 2024-25, the 5-foot-10 sharpshooter averaged 8.9 points, 1.7 rpg, and 1.5 apg per game across 28 appearances, including eight starts while logging 19.5 minutes per contest.
Sophie Swanson is a Game-Changer For the Hokies
Swanson showcased her scoring prowess with a career-high 29 points against Penn State on Feb. 27, 2025. She shot an impressive 10-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, helping Purdue secure a 92-85 road victory. She finished the season strong, reaching double figures in seven of her final nine games, and capped her Big Ten Tournament run with a 25-point outburst against Nebraska, sinking 7-of-9 three-pointers.
A former Illinois Miss Basketball in 2022, Swanson shot 36.3% from the field and 30.1% from three-point range in 2024-25, proving her ability to stretch the floor. With two years of eligibility remaining, her transfer to Virginia Tech marks a significant addition for head coach Megan Duffy, promising to bolster the Hokies with her scoring flair and big-game experience.

Swanson made a name for herself at Barrington High School in Illinois, where she was one of the state’s top players. In 2021-22, she led her team to a 30-6 record and a state runner-up finish, averaging 21.4 points and 5.2 rebounds. She also set a school record with 40 points in a game and won the prestigious Illinois Miss Basketball award as a junior.
Her all-around game included scoring, assists, and steals, though her senior season was cut short by an ACL injury. Her standout skills caught the attention of top programs, and she chose Purdue in Jan. 2022.
Swanson’s talent was evident at Purdue, but inconsistency and a shifting role held her back. She averaged 7.1 points per game as a freshman and led all NCAA freshmen in three-point shooting. Her sophomore year saw flashes of brilliance, but her shooting percentage dipped, and the team struggled. Rumors suggest her decision to transfer was motivated by the desire for a fresh start and more offensive freedom.
Now, Swanson brings her scoring ability to Virginia Tech, where she’s expected to play a key role. With the Hokies losing key players, Swanson’s deep shooting and quick release fit perfectly into their up-tempo offense. Her experience as a former top recruit adds valuable leadership, making her a perfect fit for head coach Megan Duffy’s system.
With two years left, Swanson has the potential to become one of the ACC’s top-scoring threats, helping Virginia Tech climb back into NCAA Tournament contention.
