Sonia Citron has shared a surreal moment she had with New York Liberty guard, Sabrina Ionescu moments after her WNBA draft. The Washington Mystics selected the 21-year-old Notre Dame star guard with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.
The Mystics are currently in a rebuilding phase following the retirement of two-time MVP and 2019 WNBA champion Elena Delle Donne. They’ve also appointed Sydney Johnson as head coach and Jamila Widerman as general manager.

Citron became just the 11th player taken in the first round from South Bend after she was selected by the Mystics. The Irish guard joins the likes of Kayla McBride, Skylar Diggins, and Devereaux Peters as No. 3 overall picks to the WNBA. Citron was a reliable scorer for the Irish in the 2024-25 season and was a key lockdown defender all throughout the season.

“I don’t even know,” she replied when asked how she felt that she was going to be playing against Sabrina. “She actually texted me after the draft and I was shocked. I don’t think it has really hit me yet that I’m in the same league with them because growing up, and the past couple of years I’ve been looking up at them because they are who they are and so I don’t think it has hit me up yet that I’ll be playing with them and against them which is absolutely crazy.”
Citron is widely known for her ability to score at all three levels and intensity on defense. The 21-year-old averaged 14.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.9 steals in her last season with the Irish. This earned her First-Team All-ACC honors and ACC All-Defensive Team selection. Citron has also been compared to some of the league’s top players due to her impressive performances and she revealed that it “feels amazing” to have people looking up to her now.

Asked about what it meant for her to now have people looking up to her, the 21-year-old replied: “I don’t know about that but I think it’s an amazing feeling, I’ll keep doing the same thing and I can only hope that people will try and model their game after me in some ways but it’s an honor, it’s a responsibility because they’re watching me so I always want to play the right way and do the right things.”
