Sakima Walker Transfer Portal: Top 5 Landing Spots for South Carolina’s Center

Sakima Walker, a 6-foot-5 center from Columbus, Ohio, has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal following her time with the University of South Carolina.

Walker, one of the Gamecocks’ longest-serving players, made the announcement shortly after South Carolina lost to the UConn Huskies in the national championship game.

Before joining South Carolina, Walker transferred from Rutgers University to Northwest Florida State College, where she was named the NJCAA Division I Player of the Year in 2023 after leading the Raiders to a national championship.

In her senior year at South Carolina, she averaged 2.0 points and 1.9 rebounds per game over 31 appearances. Initially entering the transfer portal with a “do not contact” restriction, recent reports indicate this restriction has been lifted, allowing teams to reach out for recruitment.

Top Five Landing Spots for Sakima Walker

Considering the evolving landscape of women’s college basketball, here are five potential destinations for Sakima Walker as she seeks her next program:

    Grand Canyon University (GCU)

Grand Canyon stands out as a logical destination. Newly hired head coach Winston Gandy, formerly a South Carolina assistant, is directly familiar with Walker’s development and potential.

GCU is building momentum in the WAC, and adding a 6’5″ post with high-major experience could elevate the program immediately. Gandy’s transition to a head coaching role likely includes plans to bring in trusted players, making Walker a prime candidate.

    Arizona State University

Arizona State is in the midst of a roster rebuild and has struggled in the post since entering the Big 12. After three challenging seasons, the Sun Devils recently parted ways with head coach Natasha Adair.

With a new coaching staff expected to emphasize defensive toughness and interior depth, Walker could contribute immediately. The program also offers a chance for significant minutes and a leadership role for a veteran, something Walker could benefit from in her final year.

    West Virginia University

West Virginia, under coach Mark Kellogg, has emphasized aggressive defense and physicality, especially in the frontcourt.

With potential post departures and a focus on bolstering interior depth for the 2025–26 campaign, Walker’s size and shot-altering presence could find a home here. WVU is also active in the portal and has a recent history of successfully integrating transfers.

UNLV (University of Nevada, Las Vegas)

UNLV has emerged as a mid-major power under head coach Lindy La Rocque, consistently dominating the Mountain West and making NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Lady Rebels could use more frontcourt depth heading into 2025–26, and Walker would get a chance to contribute significantly while returning to a winning program. UNLV has also been aggressive in the portal and has proven success developing post-players.

    Ole Miss

While Ole Miss has strong frontcourt talent, they continue to seek experienced depth after multiple key departures.

Head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s system thrives with physical, mobile bigs who defend hard and rebound well—an area where Walker could plug in as a rotation piece or matchup specialist. Additionally, the SEC’s familiarity and existing conference experience could make the transition smoother.
