Reddit Crowns UConn’s 29-Point Rout Over South Carolina as Upset of the Year

Last season, UConn blew out South Carolina in one of the upsets of the season. Going into every game in a basketball season, there are favorites for every matchup, and there are underdogs. More often than not, upsets happen, and the underdogs topple the favorites.

Every year, Reddit users participate in an online voting process where they vote for the winners of awards for selected categories. This year’s “upset of the year” award has been announced, and the winner has been announced.

UConn vs South Carolina Named “Upset of the Year” by Reddit Users.

UConn defeated South Carolina in the 2025 NCAA tournament championship game, but that wasn’t their first meeting this year. Earlier in the year, in February, UConn embarrassed South Carolina in a 29-point blowout, a game that has now been voted upset of the year by Reddit users.

The games shortlisted for the awards are UCLA 77 vs. South Carolina 62 (November 24, 2024), Utah 78 vs. Notre Dame 67 (November 30, 2024), Iowa 76 vs. USC 69 (February 2, 2025), UConn 87 vs. South Carolina 58 (February 16, 2025), and TCU 71 vs. Notre Dame 62 (March 29, 2025).

People were beginning to wonder if UConn still belongs to the upper echelons of women’s college basketball.

“We just got punked today. It’s very much embarrassing,” Paopao said after the match. “That’s not who we are. We’ve got to do a better job giving effort and being mentally tough.”

“When you lose like this, something else is happening that isn’t just about basketball.
