No. 1 Women’s Basketball Recruit Aaliyah Chavez Commits to Oklahoma

Aaliyah Chavez, Lubbock Monterey’s five-star senior, was the nation’s No. 1 girls high school basketball recruit in the Class of 2025. After leading her team to a 31-6 record last year, she took it to another level this year as she’s single-handedly racked up more than five entire teams on Monterey’s schedule.

Chavez was named the 2025 Naismith Award winner. She was also named first-team All-American for the second consecutive year. With all of these wild accomplishments coming her way, her NIL has soared, and she has now committed to Oklahoma.

Chavez’s senior season was impressive, as she averaged 34.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 3.7 steals per game. She led Monterey to a 37-5 record and finished her career leading her team to its first state title in 44 years in the Class 5A Division II finals.

In this year’s playoffs, she averaged 29.3 points per game, including outstanding games of 50 and 45 points, outscoring other teams they’ve played. These are outlandish numbers for any high school basketball player, regardless of gender.

Chavez saw her NIL value now reach over $1.5M for the first-time. The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners were the frontrunners to recruit her, with fellow finalists being South Carolina Gamecocks, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and UCLA Bruins. While it didn’t come cheap, any of these teams were more than able to afford her.

Here is what 247Sports said about her game:

“Rated as the No. 1 player in the class, Chavez is a prolific yet efficient scoring option at the guard position. She can play on the basketball or off though she might be best suited to be a primary lead guard in college. Chavez gets her shot off as easily as any high school guard I can remember dating back to the days of Kelsey Mitchell as a prep prospect. A five-star guard, Chavez has legitimate shooting range to 25 feet with the ability to get into the teeth of the defense on a consistent basis to make a shot or find a corner shooter. Chavez has been busy getting buckets all over the country the past 12 months participating in the USA Basketball 3-on-3 trials in Memphis, putting up an MVP-esque performance at the Nike World Basketball Festival in front of Travis Scott in New York and being named a captain in the new Overtime Select league in Atlanta.”

The 5’9″ floor general has to commit somewhere by March 25, and she has chosen to bring her talents to the Oklahoma Sooners. After defeating FGCU and Iowa, the No. 3 ranked Oklahoma women’s basketball team has made it to the Sweet 16, where they are set to do battle with the No. 2 ranked UConn Huskies.

The Sooners and their fans now have a lot to look forward to as they have landed the No. 1 recruit in the entire nation, Chavez. “They match how I want to play; I want to play fast,” said Chavez of Oklahoma’s up-tempo guard play.

Chavez, who plans to make her commitment official when the signing period opens on April 16, attended the Sooners’ first-round victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday.
