“Trying To Get Me In Trouble”: Minnesota’s $413,000 Star Drops Hilarious Response To Dawn Staley’s Sneaky Coaching Question

Basketball legend and South Carolina women’s basketball team head coach, Dawn Staley, is having a lot of fun with her TV gig. Earlier this year, Staley joined CBS Sports as an analyst, and she has already become a pro at asking sneaky questions to players.

After the Minnesota Lynx’s 86-80 victory over the New York Liberty, Kayla McBride joined the CBS broadcast for a post-game interview. During her conversation, Staley put her on the spot with a question about her coach, Cheryl Reeve.

“Now, lighthearted question. What is it like, after a loss and being coached by Cheryl Reeve?” Staley asked.

Staley has played under Reeve, so she might have an idea of what it’s like for the Lynx players. When Staley was with the Charlotte Sting during her WNBA career, Reeve had two separate stints as their assistant coach.

“That’s such a loaded question,” McBride said. “You’re trying to get me in trouble. You know, as a player and you’re a coach yourself, it’s hard to answer that question. It’s two folded. I have so much love for Cheryl as a person, and I know she does for me the same.”

As for Reeve’s reaction to losses, McBride said that the Lynx coach holds herself and her players to a very high standard. So, it’s not the lightest locker room when the team loses, but that’s only because they never want to lose any game.

However, even in those tense situations, Reeve motivates her team to pick themselves up and go out to get the next win. So far in this season, the Lynx have been unstoppable. With 28 wins and just five losses, they are at the top of the table.

McBride, who signed a two-year, $413,000 contract with the team, has been brilliant this season. She is averaging 14.8 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.4 rebounds in 29 games. Safe to say, Reeve would be very pleased with her team’s performance.

Cheryl Reeve opened up about benching Diana Taurasi

Reeve runs a tight ship. That could be the reason why Staley asked McBride such a cheeky question. It’s Reeve’s pursuit of greatness and always going for the win that makes her great. In that pursuit, she has made some controversial decisions.

The most notable on the list would be benching Diana Taurasi, arguably the most successful woman athlete in Olympic basketball, in the gold medal game. Despite the controversy, Reeve still stands by her decision.

During an appearance on “In Case You Missed It” with Khristina Williams, Reeve explained the logic behind her decision.

“It is the hardest coaching job there is in that, whether it’s Steve Kerr on the men’s national team or whether it’s me with the women’s national team, you’re going to piss a lot of people off because there are a lot of great players who aren’t playing like they want to play.”

“They’re great players for their teams, they’re great players in the league, but not everybody can be the great player on the national team, right? You have to make a choice.”

In the end, when someone looks back at the women’s campaign at the Paris Olympics, all they’ll see and care about is the fact that Reeve took her team past France to win gold. Although the controversy was notable, she still achieved the desired result.
