MiLaysia Fulwiley’s Mom’s Role in Her Success Explained After Kim Mulkey’s Big Reveal

When Kim Mulkey landed one of the most electric guards in the country through the transfer portal, she made it clear the decision didn’t come after a long, drawn-out recruitment. According to the LSU head coach, MiLaysia Fulwiley made her choice quickly,  and it was her mother, Phelliccia Mixon, who helped steer the process from start to finish.

How Phelliccia Mixon Helped Guide MiLaysia Fulwiley’s Basketball Career

During an appearance on Baton Rouge attorney Gordon McKernan’s podcast, Mulkey revealed she spoke with Fulwiley and her mother only once before the deal was done. “It didn’t take much,” Mulkey said. The rising junior didn’t even make an official visit to LSU before committing, an uncommon move in the high-stakes world of college basketball recruitment. But when it came to Fulwiley, her mind was made up, and her mother was right there helping her navigate every step.

That’s nothing new. Phelliccia Mixon has long been a central figure in MiLaysia Fulwiley’s basketball career. From AAU tournaments to major college decisions, she’s been her daughter’s support system, business manager, and biggest fan.

This level of sacrifice wasn’t just about showing up, it was about showing belief. MiLaysia said watching her mother work tirelessly “to make sure we got what we wanted by any means necessary” became a motivating force in her own pursuit of success. That work ethic translated into Fulwiley’s relentless drive on the court, where she dazzled with her athleticism, creativity, and scoring ability.

Her mom’s basketball roots played a part, too. Phelliccia Mixon had a love for the game, and that passion clearly transferred to her daughter. As a child, MiLaysia once told her mom she would someday play for “the real team,” and now she’s living that dream at the highest level of women’s college basketball.

Mixon’s role in her daughter’s decisions didn’t stop after high school. When it came time to choose a college, she reportedly influenced Fulwiley’s initial decision to sign with Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks. That move paid off early in her career, including a breakout performance in the 2024-25 SEC Tournament Championship against LSU, where she scored 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Now, after transferring to LSU, Fulwiley is bringing that same energy, and her mom’s trusted guidance, to Baton Rouge. As Kim Mulkey continues to build a powerhouse program, having a player like Fulwiley, backed by a family as involved and supportive as hers, may be one of the team’s biggest wins yet.
