How Does MiLaysia Fulwiley Fit With Kim Mulkey’s LSU? Assessing Ex-South Carolina Guard’s Potential Impact Alongside Flau’jae Johnson, and More

After two years at Dawn Staley’s South Carolina, MiLaysia Fulwiley shocked many when she announced that she was entering the transfer portal before deciding to go with LSU. The guard provided some spark off the bench for the Gamecocks during much of her time there, but is now seen to get a bigger role now that she has transferred to Kim Mulkey’s squad at Baton Rouge for the 2025-2026 season.

During her freshman and sophomore years with South Carolina, Fulwiley had been a very consistent bench presence, averaging 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 18.9 minutes per game as a sophomore and 11.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 18.4 minutes as a freshman. She started only three games and functioned more as a sixth woman for Staley, especially if the Gamecocks needed a scoring spark.

As her stats suggest, MiLaysia Fulwiley is more of a score-first shooting guard, shooting 43.2% from the field and 30.2% from behind the arc during her two years with the Gamecocks. However, with her joining a team with a lot of good guards like Mikaylah Williams and Flau’jae Johnson, as well as some incoming freshmen like Bella Hines, she is largely seen to fill out a much more similar role with the Tigers, though she may get more playing time than she did at South Carolina.

In her junior year, she will probably still be playing the sixth woman role, though there may be a chance that she could start a few games too. With the addition of five-star freshman power forward Grace Knox, LSU has beefed up its frontline, and this could free her up to score from the outside, which means she might get more minutes in there as well, with her and Hines being seen as a cure to LSU’s long range woes.

Kim Mulkey Says It Did Not Take Much To Recruit MiLaysia Fulwiley to LSU

As for how Mulkey got to MiLaysia Fulwiley, LSU head coach Kim Mulkey admitted that the guard played particularly well whenever South Carolina played the Tigers, and then she approached her, talked to her mother, and it did not take much for her to flip.

“It didn’t take much. I spoke to her and her mother one time. One time. And she has not even come here on a visit. She has played against us enough to know our style of play. These young people do their homework. They look at rosters, they look at openings in the starting five, they look at openings in the rotation… and she pretty much I think had her mind made up,” Mulkey said.

“And it was not an easy thing to sell, but you’re always nervous. And that’s what makes it not easy,” she added. “But she’s an exciting player, she plays with a lot of flair. She’s going to come to a program that has great players. And we’re going to be excited when we can get her on that floor.”

Mulkey has been very impressed with the former South Carolina guard, and from what Mulkey had said, Fulwiley had already made her decision to transfer from the beginning.
