Much has been said about former President Barack Obama‘s connection to basketball, but what about his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama? She is actually the younger sister of former Oregon State and Brown University head coach Craig Robinson, who appeared on Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson’s “ALL THE SMOKE” podcast to talk basketball, and he brought Michelle Obama along, too.
Robinson, who played small forward at Princeton during his playing days, touched on several topics, including the beef between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, which has been brewing since their college days.
“I think the storylines of a real rivalry are good for the game. Yes, and the hate is the hate; it’s part of social media, it’s part of society today. But I have been saying for the last I don’t know, maybe 10 years, You’ve heard me say this: the women’s game needed real drama, not fabricated drama,” said Robinbson.
“You needed real drama. And for the first time in the last couple of years, you saw actual beef—real beef. And it started in college. I love it, and they transferred it to the WNBA,” he added.
The former Oregon State coach added that the WNBA is using that rivalry, the hero-villain mechanic, to draw people in. Today, Clark and Reese are two of the most popular players in the WNBA and have helped the league rake in record profits and turning things around for the league.
Michelle Obama, on the other hand, noted that the hate these players have been getting on social media is real and is blowing up attacks on them. She added that this negativity and hatred are what are making things worse.
How Good Was Craig Robinson as a College Basketball Coach?
While he is more known as the brother of Michelle Obama or Barack Obama’s brother-in-law, Craig Robinson was once a very respected college basketball coach. He is currently the executive director of the NABC, but is more known for his time as the coach for Oregon State and Brown.
He spent two seasons at Brown University and was the 2006-2007 Ivy League Coach of the Year, having won 30 games in his two seasons as head coach. At Oregon State, he won 94 games, leading the Beavers to four postseason appearances. He is credited with turning the team, taking over the team after the Beavers suffered a winless season prior, winning 18 games in his first season as head coach.
