LSU women’s basketball team are up 3-0 so far in the college basketball season this year. The team recently clinched a 118-70 win against Georgia Southern in what was considered Flau’jae Johnson‘s homecoming game at her native state Georgia. She led the game with 19 points while ZaKiyah Johnson also had a great game, scoring 17 points while making 8/9 shots. In a way, the Tigers look prepared to face all adversities and challenges when SEC play begins.
But how will Kim Mulkey’s LSU hold up for this season’s college basketball? That’s a question many fans are pondering upon.
With the current pieces lining up strong with Kim Mulkey’s expectations, the LSU Tigers once again seem favorites from the SEC to continue with another deep run in this season’s campaign. LSU has made back-to-back appearances in the Final Four, which seems like a possibility this time around too.
The Tigers have undergone an overhaul, with many new names in the form of transfers and freshmen joining in. If Kim Mulkey’s LSU are indeed to be tested, are they ready for it? Here are some of the key observations about this new roster that you’d need to know.
MiLaysia Fulwiley Is The New Rejuvenation For The Tigers
MiLaysia Fulwiley moved to LSU Tigers after playing for the Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks for two seasons. The transfer guard posted 21 points in the season opener and went ahead to score 19 points in the game against Georgia Southern. She had a rather impressive start with a 57.1% field goal percentage. Fulwiley is showing a lot of efficiency in terms of scoring. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t adding up on defense too.
Fulwiley added three steals on Sunday’s game, bringing her season total to 13. She adds great potential as a two-way guard, which the Tigers had envisioned while signing her. Watch out for her to show up in some incredible performances through this season’s campaign.
Kate Koval Is A Force To Reckon With Inside The Post
Kim Mulkey has always had forces down low. Be it Angel Reese or Kate Koval, she just knows how to develop players who have the potential to dominate inside the post. And now, Koval is emerging as another formidable option for the Tigers down low. Transferring to LSU from Notre Dame, the expectations on her was to improve the defense. But now, she is outperforming on the offensive end too.
Koval scored back-to-back double-doubles, the latest scoring 12 points and 14 rebounds in the game against Georgia Southern. She is also playing a season-high 22 minutes this year. Though she isn’t the only player for Mulkey to rely upon, Koval might just as well provide enough of leadership tenet to carry this team through this season.
Flau’jae Johnson Has Embraced A New Leadership Role
This season is a big step-up for Flau’jae Johnson. She has assumed a leadership role within the team as a senior and is averaging 16 points, 4.7 assists, and five rebounds per game. Though there has been a slight dip in her scoring from the previous season, she is expected to pick up the pace soon. However, one thing to note has been her increase in assists output.
Once again in this season, Johnson is maintaining her streak of averaging double-digits in points through her college career. Ever since the Tigers fell short of the Final Four last season, Johnson has been putting in the work which is slowly but steadily reflecting on the floor. With her, the Tigers remain safe in contention and fans can expect her to be one of the top picks if she enters the 2026 WNBA draft.
