We might be in the dog days of summer and the college basketball offseason, but LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey is still making headlines.
This week, it was announced that Mulkey will be throwing the ceremonial first pitch for Thursday’s Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) game between the Bandits and Volts.
LSU HC Kim Mulkey Set to Throw First Pitch at AUSL Game This Week In Louisiana
The AUSL is a women’s softball league that launched in 2025 to provide a new opportunity for the world’s best softball players to compete professionally. Since the league is just four teams without geographic “homes”, the schedule is comprised of a 10-stop road trip, primarily in college towns.
This stop, in Sulphur, Louisiana, right outside of Lake Charles, will feature the four-time national-title-winning coach throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

As one of the most important figures in women’s basketball, LSU’s Kim Mulkey joins a star-studded lineup of figures who have shared the same honor of throwing the first pitch throughout the AUSL’s debut season.
She joins the likes of actor Bill Murray, tennis icon Billie Jean King, and U.S. women’s soccer star Abby Wambach, who have shared the same honor.
While Mulkey is most known for her infamous outfits and talents as a college basketball coach, her daughter, Makenzie, and her son, Kramer, have extensive experience with softball and baseball. Makenzie plays softball for Baylor, while Kramer had a career at LSU.
While the LSU Head Coach previously played softball as a child, her most recent experience as a pitcher came during a hilarious moment during a Savannah Bananas game last year, after she was invited out to throw a first pitch in Baton Rouge.

During this moment, the umpire declared that the LSU Head Coach had thrown a ball, while Mulkey argued back that it was a strike. Ultimately, in true Savannah Bannanas fashion, this led to a back-and-forth between the umpire and Mulkey, which saw the coach ultimately being “thrown out of the game” for her intimidation tactics.
As Mulkey prepares for her fifth season as the Tigers’ head coach, she has one of her better rosters to date. Last year saw a trip to the Elite Eight, but the Tigers came up short. Can the legendary coach lead her squad to another national title?
