“A’ja Wilson Doesn’t Have the Competition”: Lisa Leslie Places Doubts on GOAT Status for Aces’ Star

A’ja Wilson has just updated her resume in supreme fashion. Up and down in the months of June and July, A’ja Wilson has led the Aces to an epic comeback and win the WNBA championships. Their record in the start of the season was an underwhelming 14-14. A 50+ loss vs the Minnesota Lynx interestingly switched things around for the Aces. A’ja Wilson awakened the beast, and the Aces went on a 16 game winning streak to qualify for the playoffs.

The Aces went all the way and won the WNBA title, dominating against Phoenix Mercury 4-0. A’ja Wilson has now won 3 WNBA championships, 2 WNBA Finals MVP, 3 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and 4 WNBA MVP awards. She is also the fastest to reach 5,000 career points in WNBA history. That resume certainly backs A’ja Wilson to compete for the GOAT status in the women’s game. However, Lisa Leslie recently dropped her 2 cents on Wilson’s stature.

“Well, here’s my thing. I never really talked about this whole GOAT thing, and I know that it’s tough because there’s different eras. Like Cheryl Miller was amazing and she may be somebody’s GOAT, right? Because she did so much great things in women’s basketball and getting us to the platform where we were before the WNBA ever began. Then you have, I guess you have Cheryl, you have myself, you have Cynthia Cooper, all different positions, amazing players.” Lisa Leslie named some of the greatest WNBA players who are in the GOAT conversation at 17:40 of the podcast.

“Lauren Jackson, amazing players. Then you have Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, amazing players. Then you have Maya Moore come in, an amazing player. And I just feel like it’s so tough. And then you have A’ja. And I feel like A’ja is like taking home everything. I feel like A’ja doesn’t have the competition to be really honest. Like the competition. I don’t know. I just feel like when you look at centers and forwards across the board in the league, that position is starting to go away at a fast rate.” Leslie concluded.

A’ja Wilson and Aces Crowned WNBA Champions

Finishing off an epic comeback, Aces wrapped up the WNBA finals comfortably, winning 4-0 vs Phoenix Mercury. The finals had a couple of close games. Game 1 went right down the wire. Aces won 89-86. Game 2 was in the bag comfortably with 91-78.

Game 3 was 1 game where Mercury came close to winning. But A’ja Wilson made a game winning jumper and won the game 90-88 in the dying second. Aces won the game 4 97-86 and clinched the WNBA finals in grand fashion.
