Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers did not quite have the best start to SEC play. They fell 0-2 in the conference, but have bounced back with an 80-59 win over the Georgia Bulldogs. Coach Mulkey never minces her words regarding this and did not shy away from addressing the team’s blip in form. Before the Tigers could find their footing, Mulkey challenged her roster to undergo a period of intense self-reflection. Earlier this week, she said,
“We have to do some self-reflection. Put a mirror in front of your face, individually and go, ‘What did I do that contributed to that loss?’”
The external noise around the team’s chemistry and defensive lapses is growing louder than ever. But Mulkey maintains a steady hand. She insists that the early setbacks were merely growing pains for a team still finding its SEC identity.
Following a breakthrough win against Georgia, Mulkey addressed the recent panic with her trademark bluntness. She said,
“The sky is not falling.”
In a way, she effectively silenced the alarmist narratives circling around the program. While acknowledging that the road ahead remains difficult and injuries such as Flau’jae Johnson’s “puffy ankles” could be a hindrance, she emphasized that it definitely does not define LSU’s season ahead.
Injuries are a part of sports… you hate it, but it’s nothing serious,” Mulkey noted, pivoting the focus back to LSU’s long term goal.
With their first SEC win secured, LSU heads into the heart of the conference schedule with renewed confidence and a clear message that the Tigers are far from finished.
LSU Stepped Up In a Spectacular Show Against Georgia
The response to the challenges LSU has been facing was with a dominant victory on Thursday night. LSU dismantled Georgia in an 80-59 victory, serving as a loud reminder of the Tigers’ championship potential. Every major player on the roster stepped up for this amazing comeback in conference play.
Flau’jae Johnson, after being held scoreless in her previous game, returned to her form, erupting for 25 points, 15 of which came in a dominant fourth-quarter show. Amiyah Joyner finished the game with a double-double, and ZaKiyah Johnson contributed with a gritty 12-point effort. The Tigers had definitely reclaimed their defensive edge and transition speed in this matchup. This victory was a direct answer to the question raised against Mulkey’s leadership after a winless start to January.
