“It Just Gets Worse”: Kelsey Plum Breaks Silence on Viral Caitlin Clark All-Star T-Shirt Remark

WNBA star Kelsey Plum received heavy backlash after she jokingly alleged that Caitlin Clark and her All-Star team didn’t come on time to attend the meeting during which WNBA All-Star players were going to decide to wear the famous “Pay Us What You Owe Us” t-shirts during the pre-game warmups. The moment was supposed to give a message to the league amid their ongoing CBA negotiations, where the players are hoping to get paid more.

While the remarks were intended to be on the fun side, many took them the other way. Recently, during her appearance on “Bird’s Eye View with Sue Bird” podcast, the LA Sparks guard revisited that press conference and acknowledged that she shouldn’t have said what she said because the moment was too important to add any fun banter to it.

“Yeah, I made a really bad joke. It was a tough one,” Plum said (1:22:50). “I should have known it was a more serious moment than a typical All-Star game because of the shirts and the fans. I went into that press conference very happy-go-lucky. We won, had a great weekend, my family here. It was just a great time.”

“The questions came in and it was all about the CBA, this, this, and this. Honestly, I was like, “Hey, Team Clark didn’t make it to the meeting either.” It was a joke, trying to make the room lighter. They were hungover—that was the joke. Even though they called our team nickname “hungover,” I was like, “At least we made it.”

Kelsey clarified that all the players on the All-Star roster were unified on what they were trying to say to the league. She added:

“Obviously, we’re all on the same page. We all wore the shirts. We’re all unified. If anything, I was just more discouraged because I felt like it took away from the moment of what we were trying to do. You don’t even get to respond, and if you do, you seem defensive. That’s why I didn’t even say anything. I was like, “Alright.” You seem defensive, and it just gets worse.”

Caitlin Clark takes the high road after Kelsey Plum’s controversial comment about Team Clark

Rather than getting back to Kelsey Plum for her controversial remark, Caitlin Clark seems to have taken the high road with a playful jab of her own. On Instagram, she commented on a post by Plum. The Sparks star posed in front of a giant Nike logo despite being an Under Armour athlete.

“Thank u for the Nike ad,” Clark commented under the post.

Apart from this cheeky jibe, Clark has not directly addressed Plum’s comments about the missed meeting. Meanwhile, Plum lamenting about her statement makes it seem like all is good between the player as they stay united amid a tough negotiating period between the WNBA and WNBA Players Association over a new CBA deal.
