“She Took Me Under Her Wing”: UConn’s Kamorea Arnold Opens Up About Relationship With Paige Bueckers

Paige Bueckers has left quite an impact on younger teammates during her five seasons with the UConn Huskies. One person who can attest to that fact is Kamorea Arnold, who won the NCAA championship in just her second season in women’s college basketball.

During an appearance on ‘The Dinner Table‘, Arnold was asked about the influence of Bueckers on her. Reflecting on that period, Arnold started by revealing that she was in awe of Bueckers when she first joined the program. She said (12:00):

“It was very important, honestly. Going in, you kind of feel like, Star Trek, oh my god, I get to play with Paige! Just seeing the stuff that she does, the way that she leads—not even just on the court, but off the court as well, the way she carries herself, is something that shows why every little girl, everybody, wants to watch her, look up to her, meet her. That was something I noticed as soon as I came in. She took me under her wing.”

Last season, Kamorea Arnold played all 40 games off the bench for UConn. She averaged 5.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. Meanwhile, Bueckers appeared in 38 games, while averaging 19.9 points, 4.6 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game.

During the same segment, Kamorea Arnold further added that she finds Paige Bueckers easy to communicate with. She was also left impressed by the way the Dallas Wings star handles herself on and off the court. Arnold said:

“Everybody, the whole upperclassman group, when I came in as a freshman, anything I needed, I could ask them and pick their brains about. Especially her, just the way she finds her spot on the court, the way she finishes, but also the way she takes care of her body, like recovery, different things like that, you just want to pick somebody’s brain about and try to become that way when you become an upperclassman, like I am right now. The type of leadership that she had is super important.”

Kamorea Arnold is an upcoming player for UConn, who are fresh off winning their 12th national championship. Her role is expected to be more important now that Bueckers has departed for the WNBA. However, her learnings remain with her.
