Indiana Fever fans and supporters are seemingly holding their breath, as two of their guards are presumably dealing with injuries early in the current offseason. On Tuesday, Jan. 6, Sophie Cunningham and Aari McDonald learned that they were injured.
McDonald was recently captured by @ericaf455 on X/Twitter through a clip from her most recent Unrivaled Basketball League game in which she picked up the injury. It occurred in the third quarter of the Breeze BC-Phantom BC game, as she was intentionally fouling an opponent to leave the game prematurely. McDonald was coming off a miss from the free-throw line, in which she was fouled on her layup attempt.
Please be okay Aari. We’ve seen that look before. Prayers to my girl. pic.twitter.com/66yQUJQbqQ

In Cunningham’s case, she gave a recent update on her injury via her Instagram stories. She has been out since August 2025, when she suffered a major knee injury in the Fever’s regular-season win against the Connecticut Sun in overtime by six points, 99-93. In the video Cunningham posted, she confirmed she was coming from a rehab session and shared her thoughts on how it was.
“Okay, I got two things, really two things. So, leaving rehab, the hamstring is on fire like not recovering. Oh my God, it hurts so bad,” Cunningham said.

With both the key rotation pieces of coach Stephanie White’s Fever team out with injuries, the Indiana faithful are likely hoping for the best, given that there is still a lot of time before the 2026 WNBA season begins. Last year, the Fever finished with an overall record of 24-20 and reached the playoffs as the third seed from the Eastern Conference. They went all the way to the semifinals.
Aari McDonald Assures Her Fans That She Is Doing Okay
Similar to Sophie Cunningham, Aari McDonald’s 2025 campaign also came to a screeching halt when she dealt with a broken foot last August. With her leaving her most recent Unrivaled game prematurely, fans and spectators speculated whether she aggravated her aforementioned injury.
Thankfully, McDonald shared on her X/Twitter account recently that it’s just a minor setback.
Had a little scare last night.
I’m all good yall😊— Aari McDonald (@McdonaldAari2) January 6, 2026
