Geno Auriemma on “Philly Knuckleheads” Bothering Him During His Workout in Boston Celtics Jersey: “I Love It”

Geno Auriemma is a known Philadelphia Eagles fan. After the Eagles won last year’s Super Bowl, the UConn Huskies coach didn’t shy away from boasting about his fandom for the NFL team. It seems like some fans assumed that Auriemma is a one-city fan and that he has to support the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA.

However, Auriemma has news for the 76ers fans.

“I got a place down at the Jersey shore, and every time I go work out, I wear a Celtics basketball jersey. Man, the stuff I get from those Philly knuckleheads. And I love every minute of it… They go like ‘Yo, dude, how come you don’t have a Sixers jersey?’ I say ‘Cause they suck,'” said Auriemma (via SiriusXM NBA Radio’s X handle).

While Auriemma was born in Italy, he grew up in the United States, with his family moving to Norristown, Pennsylvania, when he was just seven years old.

Geno Auriemma on Sue Bird’s Induction Into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame

In June this year, it was announced that Geno Auriemma’s former player, Sue Bird, would be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. With the ceremony set for Friday, Sept. 5, CT Insider spoke with people who played key roles in Bird’s career.

Key among them was, of course, her college coach, Geno Auriemma, who said:

“The more she played, and then the more she was involved, whether it’s (Team) USA, the WNBA, it’s like, everywhere she went, she just won championship after championship after championship. She was the best player in college, and she was the best guard in the WNBA. She was the best guard in the Olympics. It’s almost like it was meant to be. She deserves everything she gets. Unbelievable.”

In four seasons at Storrs, Bird won two national championships, while collecting personal accolades like the Wade Trophy, the Honda Sports Award, the Naismith College Player of the Year, and the Big East Player of the Year. She was twice an All-American and twice a First-team All-Big East selection.

When it came to leaving for the WNBA, she was the first overall pick of the 2002 Draft, selected by the Seattle Storm, where she spent her entire career.
