Geno Auriemma is on a mission to extend his lead as the coach with the most national championships in women’s basketball history. He has already led UConn to 19 undefeated conference seasons, including eight consecutive, of which six were undefeated overall.
He holds the record for most wins (1,244) among college coaches with a minimum of 10 seasons at any level (men’s or women’s). The 71-year-old coach has a beautiful and loving family as his supporting cast.

Meet the Auriemmas: Coach Geno’s Wife and Kids
Auriemma is credited with redefining women’s basketball at UConn, and rightfully so. Geno is married to Kathy Auriemma, whom he met over forty years ago in College. Geno was a basketball player, while Kathy belonged to the cheerleading squad.
Kathy is a very familiar character in the UConn locker room, and some of the players call her a second mom. In Kathy’s words, “I’m whatever they need me to be.” The girls affectionately call her “Mrs. A.”
A former player once said, “When you think of the brains of UConn basketball, you think of coach Auriemma. But when you think of the heart, you think of Mrs. A.”
According to People magazine, the pair has been married since 1978 and has three children. They have two daughters, Jenna and Alysa, and a son named Michael. Alysa Auriemma graduated from UConn and also has a degree in English literature from the University of Connecticut.
Michael Auriemma went to Assumption University and graduated with a degree in Mass Communication/Media Studies. He has worked as an Enterprise Account Executive at Comcast Business.
Geno and Kathy are grandparents, and they have three grandkids. Their first grandkid came in 2010, when their daughter Jenna and her husband, Todd Stigliano, gave birth, and they’ve had two more since then.
Geno Auriemma’s Illustrious Career
Prior to 1985, UConn had only one winning season in history, but their fortunes remarkably changed, and Auriemma is solely responsible for that.
The legendary Hall of Famer has led UConn to 11 NCAA Division I Tournament titles and 28 conference regular-seasons titles. He also won eight Naismith Coach of the Year awards, seven WBCA National Coach of the Year awards, nine AP Coach of the Year awards, and 13 Big East Coach of the Year awards, among many other individual accolades.

Along with his record of most wins, Auriemma has the highest winning percentage among NCAA basketball coaches who have spent a minimum of 10 seasons at any level, men’s or women’s. He is also the fastest coach to 800, 900, 1,000, 1,100, and 1,200 wins at any level, men’s or women’s.
Auriemma and UConn are currently in the 2025 Final Four, and they’ll battle USC in their quest to add a 12th banner.
