Flau’jae Johnson’s Mom Pens Heartfelt Message After LSU Star’s 0-Point Performance vs Vanderbilt

LSU Tigers guard Flau’jae Johnson just received an emotional message from one of her loved ones after she had a poor outing by her standards. On Sunday, Jan. 4, Johnson and the rest of the 2025-26 Tigers team faced off against coach Shea Ralph’s Vanderbilt Commodores in away territory, the Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee, in the hopes of getting win No. 15 in the ongoing campaign.

Unfortunately for Johnson, she produced one of the worst games of her career thus far, as she went scoreless after four field goal attempts, along with just three rebounds and an assist in 19 minutes of playing time. This resulted in a four-point loss to the Commodores, 65-61. Amid criticism, her mother, Kia Brooks, wrote an encouraging message for her on Instagram on Monday.

“KeepSmiling #YouAlreadyBeatTheOdds @flaujae, you are fearfully and wonderfully made, and don’t you ever forget that. Through your challenges, you will gain strength in Jesus’ name. Your life is like no other, so your obstacles and journey will be unique. No one, off- game, defines your gift, and any naysayer who hasn’t walked in your shoes but wants to judge or humiliate you is insecure themselves,” Brooks started her letter.

“That’s why they follow your life to be inspired because they know deep inside they could never walk a day in those 9’s. They were only made specifically for you. Yes, get used to it, sports parents; there are grown people jealous of children, and I’m watching as the demons that were once clapping and the ones that never clapped even during some of those amazing times in her career have unveiled their mask,” she continued.

Johnson is in the fourth and likely final year of her collegiate hoops career with coach Kim Mulkey’s Tigers. She won the national title in the 2022-23 campaign during her first season, and is aiming to do the same this year. Johnson is widely regarded as one of the top prospects for the 2026 WNBA Draft.

Kia Brooks Compares Flau’jae Johnson’s Journey To That Of NBA Legends

In the same letter penned for her daughter, Kia Brooks compared Flau’jae Johnson’s journey to that of NBA legends. Brooks mentioned past and present NBA superstars, such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Michael Jordan, who also had their fair share of struggles in their glorious careers.

“Flau’jae, there’s a calling on your life, and with the field we’ve chosen, there are gonna be days like this. Jordan went through it, LeBron go through it, Curry go through it, and so on, so you are not exempt. But what I asked you to do is stay strong mentally through the storm. You would only encourage and gain even more respect from real fans who appreciate and see how beautiful the story turned out because you continue to work hard and silence the noise,” Brooks wrote.
