“Either Pay Them or No Play”: Fans Enraged As Napheesa Collier-Led WNBA Players’ Plea Gets Another Setback

The WNBA movement towards better pay, led by Minnesota Lynx guard Napheesa Collier, has apparently met with another setback. On Tuesday, Oct. 28, it was reported by @espnw on Instagram that league officials have formally offered a 30-day extension for the players to continue their intense negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement for higher compensation.

This comes as past year reports have indicated that there has been no concrete progress in the fight for higher pay between players and WNBA higher-ups, including commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Players now have 30 days to work out a better CBA with the league, as surpassing this may entail negotiations to be extended into next year.

“The WNBA offered players a 30-day extension on Tuesday to continue negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, sources told @alexaphilippou_espn. 🔗 in bio for more,” @espnw on Instagram captioned.

Some users called for a WNBA lockout, reminiscent of the 2011-12 NBA season.

“Just cancel the league. Let it be a lockout and then you’re gonna see all of the players true colors. They’ll come begging back. If they rejected an increase to $850,000 and they’re expecting $1 million in pay, then I don’t know what planet they’re on. No one will be upset if this league is cancelled. The owners will save a lot more money,” one user explained.

“Hopefully, there is a lock out or the NBA just cuts that league off completely. Caitlin can gonna play in the Big 3 and other leagues while everyone else has to go to Russia,” another user said.

Napheesa Collier And Cathy Engelbert Have Been Going At It When It Comes To WNBA Compensation

Napheesa Collier made headlines on Sept. 30 during her exit interview from the 2025 WNBA season, as she unleashed a lengthy and passionate rant targeting league officials, especially WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

Collier alleged that Engelbert made statements that were detrimental to the league and players. Engelbert responded, saying:

“I have the utmost respect for Napheesa and for every single player in our league. They are at the center of everything we do. I was disheartened to hear that some players feel the league and me personally do not care about them or listen to them. And if the players in the W don’t feel appreciated and valued by the league, then we have to do better and I have to do better.”
