Over the last few months, Labubu has become the new internet sensation. Typically popular among the younger generation, the rage of Labubu is such that even Dawn Staley knows what they are. And she has Klay Thompson and Megan Thee Stallion to thank for it.
In a recent episode of CBS Sports’ “We Need To Talk,” the show’s panel was asked what a Labubu is. Surprisingly, Staley had the right answer. She said:
“I think I know this answer only because of Klay Thompson and…Meg. He gave her those little things. I didn’t know they’re called Labubus, but those little scary-looking things.”
Staley was referring to a post by Stallion where she bragged about getting a Labubu from her boyfriend, the Dallas Mavericks star, Klay Thompson. Interestingly, Staley couldn’t recall Stallion’s name but she knew about Labubus.

Labubu, created by Hong Kong illustrator Kasing Lung, is a line of collectible plush toys. It’s an entire series featuring toys with different expressions and clothing. Labubu is the central figure of that collection and is a monster with sharp teeth, large ears, and a scruffy appearance.
While Staley did well in this test, her co-host, Sarah Grace Kustok, struggled with the question. Her first guess was:
“I got a little Labubu on my arm because I fell.”
She made a couple more attempts but they were all far from the meaning of Labubu in the given context. Renee Montgomery, on the other hand, seemed to be well versed with the concept of Labubu and what it means.
“A Labubu is a thing you put on your [waist].”
Montgomery later stated that the past generations used to have different collectible toys. A Labubu is nothing but a collectible for the current generation.
Dawn Staley once revealed why she continues to be involved with the sport
Dawn Staley has done everything one could possibly do as a sportsperson. She has an unmatched resume, incomparable influence, and a legacy that simply can’t be outmatched. One might have bigger and better numbers, but they lack the impact Staley has made.
As one of the pioneers for women’s basketball, Staley is truly in a league of her own. Even at 55, she is a coach dedicated to South Carolina’s women’s basketball program. During an interview with GQ in 2021, she was asked what keeps her going. She said:
“I feel like there are things that I have to do. More so to protect young people and also guide them. And my work isn’t done, but I’m probably gonna be the type of coach that…I’m just gonna break, I’m just gonna go. Once I feel like I have done all I can do.”
Dawn Staley also added that she did the same thing in her career as an athlete, and the second chapter of her life wouldn’t be any different.
