“Never Cheated On It”: South Carolina HC Dawn Staley Gets 100% Real On Veteran Basketball Career

South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley has been part of the game of basketball for most of her life. She played in college starting in 1988 and then had a pro career that lasted until 2006. She has now established herself as one of the winningest coaches in the history of women’s college basketball. She has been the head coach of the Gamecocks since 2008, winning three national championships.

In May, Staley released her new book, “Uncommon Favor: Basketball, North Philly, My Mother, and the Life Lessons I Learned from All Three.” Since then, she has appeared on various podcasts and talk shows to promote the book. On Friday, she appeared on “CBS Mornings” and spoke about the impact basketball had on her life. A clip was posted on Instagram by the “CBS Mornings” account.

“I mean, growing up in the projects in North Philly, you’re either going to have a life of whatever that community is, or you can choose a life of sports, and I chose sports,” Dawn Staley said. “I chose sports so much that I absolutely loved what it gave me.

“It gave me confidence, it gave me competitiveness, it gave me perseverance because I was the only girl in my neighborhood playing and I had no alternative motives. I just fell in love with the game of basketball and I never cheated on it. To this day.”

Dawn Staley Now Uses Her Platform To Give Back to Communities in Need

Dawn Staley comes from humble roots, and now that she is in a position where she can help young people and struggling communities, she does not hesitate to do so. In early August, she helped host a back-to-school bash for kids in the Richland School District One. Staley spoke about the event and why she helps.

“There are pockets of the communities that need help,” Staley said. “So we want to be on the ground in the communities of places that are enthused about us being here. The shoes are a big thing. It’s a big thing for me. As a kid, when I was growing up, I didn’t care what I looked like from my ankles up.”

Now that Dawn Staley has helped her community, she can help the South Carolina Gamecocks get back to the national championship game. The Gamecocks have reached the final game of the year in three of the past four seasons, winning twice. However, this past season, they lost to the UConn Huskies.
