South Carolina HC Dawn Staley Makes Loyalty Clear As Jalen Hurts’ Philadelphia Eagles Take On Dallas Cowboys In NFL Season Opener

The 2025 NFL season kicks off with one of the most storied rivalries in all of sport: the Philadelphia Eagles vs. the Dallas Cowboys. One long-time football fan has made which side she is on, and that is South Carolina Gamecocks WBB head coach Dawn Staley. She is known to be a massive Eagles fan, and she made it clear on X as she cheered on the “Birds.”

“PHILLY TOUGH!! Let’s gooooooo! GO BIRDS!! @Eagles,” she wrote.

Staley was born and raised in Philadelphia and has been a massive Eagles fan since she was young. As seen in the tweet, she shared a video about several Eagles players talking about what toughness means to them.

The Eagles vs Cowboys game kicks off on Friday at 8:00 PM ET, with the two teams’ respective fan bases known for being some of the most passionate football fans in the country and hating the other team. This gives their storied rivalry even more depth.

Meanwhile, Dawn Staley herself is getting ready for the new 2025-2026 season of college basketball. She led the Gamecocks to back-to-back national finals appearances, winning one in 2024 but losing to UConn in 2025. She is aiming to bounce back this season and return to the national final for a third year in a row, with the Gamecocks considered one of the favorites to win it all again.

Dawn Staley Says She Would Have Left South Carolina for the New York Knicks

The New York Knicks were in need of a new head coach after firing Tom Thibodeau, and Dawn Staley was one of the people they approached for the vacant job. This was later confirmed by the University of South Carolina and Dawn Staley herself. The Knicks ultimately went with former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Mike Brown, but Staley was very close to becoming the first woman to ever coach in the NBA.

During her appearance on Aaliyah Boston and Candace Parker’s “Post Moves” podcast, Staley discussed the offer and admitted that she would have taken the job if the Knicks went with her.

“I would have had to do it. Not just for me. For women. To break (that door) open,” she said. “I would have had to. It’s the New York Knicks. I’m from Philly. But it’s the freaking New York Knicks.”

She noted that when taking the interview, she asked too many questions and admitted that she “shot myself in the foot” in doing so.
