The South Carolina Gamecocks had a fun time breaking the ice in Tessa Johnson’s ‘Tea Time’ feature. Johnson’s question was, “If you were in an emergency, who are you calling in the staff besides coach [Dawn Staley]?” Players like Chloe Kitts, Madina Okot, Agot Makeer, and many others took turns to answer, and it gets more interesting from here onwards.
To start, Ayla McDowell and Ta’Niya Latson began by saying they would call assistant coach Mary Wooley in case of an emergency. Explaining why, McDowell said,
“She’s very practical and I feel like she wouldn’t overreact…she would know how to handle it.”

Next up, even Maryam Dauda said she would call Mary Wooley in case of any emergency. Agot Makeer and Chloe Kitts named assistant coach Khadijah Sessions in their answer. While Makeer believes Khadijah would probably answer her call, and might as well both end up being “hurt” together. For Kitts, it was the convenience of Khadijah responding to her calls and messages to rely on her during an emergency.
The next person up was someone all had been waiting for – Head coach Dawn Staley. Coach Staley began with a story of how associate coach Lisa Boyer would help her at every cost, even “moving mountains!”
She then went on to describe a story of how she injured one of her legs during a trip. While her knee was hurting and she couldn’t speak much from the pain, she described how Boyer would comfort her through that situation. That’s how much trust coach Staley has in her deputy!
Dawn Staley Exasperated at Ta’Niya Latson’s Attempt At An Alley-oop Dunk
Dawn Staley was recently quite exasperated by Ta’Niya Latson’s dunk attempt during the Gamecocks’ recent win against NC State. Freshman Ayla McDowell, in the third quarter of the game, sent a lob on the way towards Latson. But instead of grabbing hold of the lob, Latson allowed the ball to wobble out of bounds. Seeing this play, coach Staley seemed exasperated, throwing animated expressions at both Latson and McDowell.
However, both players made it up with their incredible performance for the rest of the game. Latson scored a season-high 32 points, marking her 21st game with more than 30+ points in her college basketball career. McDowell also finished the game with 16 points and made three triples, leading South Carolina to a blowout 106-42 win. Perhaps, this could be one mistake that Dawn Staley could let go of her star players for just a while!
