“Why Cathy [Engelbert] Calling Her a Liar?”: Fans Fuming As Napheesa Collier Takes Another Step in Feud With WNBA Commissioner

Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier has made another stride in her ongoing rift with WNBA upper management. On Saturday, Oct. 4, @justwomenssports reported through an Instagram post that Collier has cancelled her meeting with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, as per basketball analysts Ramona Shelburne and Kendra Andrews.

This comes as the latest development in the back-and-forth between Collier and Engelbert amid player compensation and salaries discussions. Earlier this month, Collier made bold claims against Engelbert during her 2025 season exit interview, alleging that the commissioner said that Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark should be grateful for the off-court opportunities she gets because of the WNBA.

Women’s basketball fans online sided with Collier, opining that it was a good move to cancel on Engelbert.

“Good for her because why Cathy calling her a liar,” one fan questioned.

“She doesn’t need another meeting with her. What for? Phee has no time for her anymore. She needs to recuperate from her injury let her be,” another fan said.

“This is what she should do. You not about to say I lied and then think we are about to meet. There’s nothing else to talk about,” another user pointed out.

“It’s not clockin’ to Cathy. Phee standing on business,” a fan claimed.

Other users in the comments section dropped their takes on Engelbert denying the accusations made by Collier.

“She didn’t answer the question. Should be easy to explain why comments are inaccurate if they’re actually inaccurate. So, why deflect???” one fan wrote.

“Nah, she had a paper. She was reading like she was writing that down then she said it,” another fan shared with an emoji.

“Cathy stated that they were addressing refs last year, yet the number of open court hits grew, eye poking grew, hits off moving screens grew and the number of season-ending injuries grew because she celebrated and green-lighted these aggressive plays by players. So no, we support Phee,” a fan explained.

Collier is coming off a respectable 2025 WNBA campaign with coach Cheryl Reeve’s Lynx team, wherein they finished with an overall record of 34-10 to rank as the top team throughout the year in the league. Their championship aspirations were thwarted by the Phoenix Mercury in their semifinal series, 3-1, as Collier did not play due to Grade 2 ligament tears on her left ankle and shin.

Cathy Engelbert Denies Making Any Of The Comments Alleged By Napheesa Collier

In the same Instagram post by @justwomenssports, a clip from Cathy Engelbert’s most recent media availability was shown, wherein she asserted that she did not make the comments that Napheesa Collier accused her of.

This came as a question was posed to Engelbert about it.

“Yeah, obviously, I did not make those comments. Caitlin has been a transformational player in this league. She’s been a great representative of the game. She’s brought in tens of millions of new fans to the game, proud of what she’s put on the court. Unfortunately, the injuries held her back from a full season this year. But again, I’m not gonna get into every point, counterpoint, it’s not productive here.”
