Breanna Stewart Injury Update: Geno Auriemma’s Former UConn Star Drops “Non Negotiable” Date For On-court Return

Former UConn Huskies star and current New York Liberty stalwart Breanna Stewart recently gave an update on her injury and when she is set to return. On Sunday, Aug. 10, WNBA reporter Myles Ehrlich uploaded a clip on his X/Twitter account which shows a transcript of a recent interview he did on the former sensation of coach Geno Auriemma’s Huskies.

The interview was done during a recent media availability Stewart had after a Liberty practice session, through which Ehrlich asked Stewart about her current coach in Sandy Brondello being quoted as saying that the 30-year-old’s timetable to return is slated for the end of August and her thoughts towards that projection.

“Breanna Stewart addressed the media today, as she works back from the knee injury that has her sidelined since July 26. She says her timeline for return is before her birthday on August 27. @Winsidr,” @MylesEhrlic captioned on X/Twitter.

Stewart then responded by asserting that she will be coming back to play for the Liberty before her big day, which is her 31st birthday on Aug. 27.

“Yeah, I think so. I think that, like the exact date we don’t have it. It just depends on how well I progress. But, I’m hoping, I’m on ’em, I’m on the training staff to let me be back, to free me a little bit. But definitely, like before my birthday, that’s a non-negotiable. I have to be back before my birthday,” Stewart said. (0:06)

In the 2025 WNBA season, which is her ninth campaign in the league, Stewart is averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks in around 31.5 minutes in the 24 appearances she has made. The Liberty currently have a 20-11 record on the year so far, good for first in the Eastern conference, as they await the return of their star forward before her birthday.

Breanna Stewart is feeling optimistic towards her knee and its recovery

During a media availability, an article by Doug Feinberg of AP News reported that Breanna Stewart is feeling positive about the recovery of her knee from a bone bruise. Stewart suffered the injury back on July 26 during a 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks.

She stated that she felt “great”. She had come off the court and said that she was allowing her injured leg, as well as the bone, as much time as she could while that time exists. She went on to state that she was hoping to be back soon from this injury, and spoke about how she wanted to be back together with her team.
