UConn’s 12th national title run last April was a historic one, as Geno Auriemma set the record for national title wins for any college coach in the NCAA. He had a strong cast of players to help him get to that milestone, including Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, Sarah Strong, and more. Given how historic that title run was, Apple TV has made a documentary regarding that run.
During his appearance on the Big East Energy Network, UConn athletic director Dave Benedict spoke up about the upcoming Apple documentary and hyped the show up.
“Well, I’ve seen the footage live, you know. So, I was at most of the things that they were at filming and so, you know, I’m not sure exactly how it was curated and what it’s going to look like, but here’s what I can tell you. I mean, look, I believe what I was told,” he said. “Someone would have to to fact check this, but I’m pretty sure that this will be the first of its kind on Apple TV with a women’s sports program or or content for that matter.”
With women’s sports becoming more and more popular, Benedict noted that this new documentary proves that UConn’s brand as a sports powerhouse. He also expressed how excited he is for that documentary to finally come out.
So, we’re we’re super excited, you know, as it relates to kind of giving people an inside look.,” the UConn AD added.
The UConn docuseries will take a look at Geno Auriemma’s 40-year career as the head coach of the UConn Huskies and will feature not just his latest players on that 12th title run, but also some past UConn legends like Rebecca Lobo, Swin Cash, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Tina Charles, Breanna Stewart, and more, all of whom won a national title with Auriemma.
Geno Auriemma Comments on Being Featured in an Apple TV Docuseries
Geno Auriemma’s legendary career will be the focus of the new Apple TV docuseries, as well as give an exclusive look at that historic 12th title run with UConn’s 2024-25 team. Auriemma himself has commented on working with Apple TV.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Apple TV+ and Skydance Sports on this project that gives a behind-the-scenes look at our National Championship run that has never been seen before,” Auriemma said in a statement. “This series offers fans an exclusive view into 40 seasons of UConn women’s basketball, and I’m really excited for audiences to be able to see all the hard work that has built this program.”
Auriemma took over the coaching position with the Huskies in 1985. Since then, he has won the NCAA national title a record of 12 times, became the winningest coach in college basketball, and had multiple perfect seasons.
