A’ja Wilson’s recent post on Threads has drawn several reactions from fans and experts alike. In what seemed like a rather cryptic message, Wilson wrote:
“You can always tell who reads articles for joy and better understanding of something or someone vs. who reads articles just to look for something they disagree on or to ‘stir up’ stuff 😂 it’s crazy out here! Yall be blessed 🤍.”
Many suggested that this might be a subtle dig towards Caitlin Clark, who is one of the biggest stars in the league. Although Wilson is the reigning MVP and WNBA champion, it’s a fact that the league has received a lot of attention and fan following in the past few years, all because of Clark and her star-studded draft class.
So, is A’ja Wilson wrong in throwing such shade at her colleague from the W? Analyst Robin Lundberg analyzed this issue, highlighting how Wilson’s reaction actually emphasizes Clark’s impact on the league. He said:
“If Caitlin Clarke had not arrived on the scene, what would the WNBA players leverage be in the CBA negotiations right now? If Caitlin Clarke just decided to leave and retire, what would be the leverage that they have in the CBA negotiations right now? Because it seems like using that impact (3:58) and the data to their advantage there is no problem, (4:03) but giving credit where it’s due is.” (3:55)
Lundberg added that Wilson’s response may have stemmed from feeling unrecognized. The analyst revisited the ‘shoe deal’ situation, where Clark received a Nike contract before Wilson publicly revealed hers. Wilson’s “delayed, not denied” post reignited racial debates online, even though she already knew about her own deal.
In a way, Lundberg expressed disbelief at Wilson’s resistance to acknowledging Clark’s pivotal role. Clark has never demanded credit. Yet, debates about her prominence persist. The issue was largely dormant until resurfacing with A’ja Wilson’s TIME Magazine Athlete of the Year coverage.
