For months, Breanna Stewart and the rest of the WNBPA have been locked in negotiations with the WNBA to hash out a new CBA. Now, with the latest extension for CBA negotiations about to come to an end, Stewart has given an update that isn’t looking too good for the upcoming WNBA season.

Speaking to reporters after a practice session for Unrivaled, the startup league that she co-founded with Napheesa Collier, Stewart bluntly stated that a new CBA would not be finalized within the next 24 hours.

We are not coming to an agreement by tomorrow, I can tell you that. We’re just going to continue to negotiate in good faith.

There is a thick layer of irony in the place where Breanna Stewart made her comments, as Unrivaled has touted the better perks that WNBA players get by competing in its games. These perks included significantly higher salaries and a host of benefits that cover well-being, leisure, and even motherhood.

Stewie, however, clarified that the players’ union still has its eyes on getting negotiations done, rather than resorting to the drastic measure of calling a strike.

It’s not something that we’re going to do right this second, but we have that in our back pocket.

Though the New York Liberty star opted for a diplomatic tone, much uncertainty remains when it comes to the 2026 WNBA season. With two expansion teams set to enter the league and other key events (such as free agency and the WNBA Draft) hanging in the balance, further delays to the accomplishment of a new CBA do not bode well for either the players or the league.

“More Teams, More Money”: Breanna Stewart Outlines Her Vision for the WNBA in the next 30 Years

Just a day prior to Breanna Stewart’s blunt admission to reporters, Sports Illustrated posted a clip of the three-time WNBA champion laying out her vision for the WNBA in the next three decades.

My ideal picture for the WNBA would be more teams, more roster spots, obviously more money. I’m gonna say, more of everything.

Stewart, who was won WNBA MVP and Finals MVP honors in her career, added that the league needs to “continue to raise the standards” as the years go by.
