Ex-Ohio State QB Kyle McCord Praises Emeka Egbuka: ‘Never the Star, Never Complained

While Ohio State Buckeyes WR Emeka Egbuka wasn't the team's No. 1 pass catcher for the majority of the 2024 season, he received praise from his ex-QB.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are primed to send multiple players to the NFL this season, including QB Will Howard and WR Emeka Egbuka. However, it was a former QB who showered Egbuka in recent praise: Kyle McCord.

Ohio State Buckeyes Emeka Egbuka Never Got His Gold Star

Egbuka’s career is finished with the Buckeyes, and he sits as the school’s all-time receiving leader in catches and yardage. His college totals were 205 receptions for 2,868 yards and 24 touchdowns. His 2024 season saw him net 1,011 yards and 10 TDs for the Buckeyes.

McCord, the Buckeyes’ starting QB in 2023 before transferring to the Syracuse Orange, said, “At Ohio State, his four years there? Obviously had a great career. He’s a great player. But they never really was the star receiver.

“Obviously, being in the room with Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, Marvin, and then just this past year with Jeremiah Smith? I never felt like he got the credit he deserved but produced every year.”

Egbuka is also credited with recognizing weaknesses in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s pass coverage that he thought his team could exploit. Did that lead to the Buckeyes ultimately winning the game? Many believe it did.

    What’s Next for Egbuka?

The Los Angeles Chargers are thought to be interested in Egbuka for the upcoming NFL Draft. He is projected as a first-round pick.

Their 2024 second-round pick, Ladd McConkey, could use some help on the Justin Herbert-led offense.

The Chargers were a one-and-done playoff team this year. After leading a team that won 11 games, Herbert stumbled badly in the postseason with a career-high four interceptions.

The Chargers are on a mission to move to the top of the AFC West. Egbuka is a guy who could help get them there.
