Why Texas’ Quiet Transfer Portal Strategy Was a Smart Move Before Grabbing Stanford’s Star Receiver

The Texas Longhorns had a dynamic group of playmakers catching passes from Quinn Ewers last season. But now, the team’s top three pass catchers, along with Ewers, have moved on to the NFL. This means that if Arch Manning takes over as quarterback this season, he’ll be throwing to a group of receivers with zero experience.

To address this, the Longhorns made a smart move in the NCAA transfer portal. They brought in Stanford wide receiver Emmett Mosley V. College football analyst JD Pickell recently highlighted how Texas played the long game. He explained that they waited for the right player, making a calculated move that could pay off big.

Texas’ Calculated Patience in the Transfer Portal Pays Off With Major Receiver Acquisition From Stanford

Mosley, who moved to Texas after Stanford fired head coach Troy Taylor, had an outstanding freshman season for the Cardinal. He made 48 catches for 525 yards and scored six touchdowns.

One of his standout moments came against Louisville when he caught 13 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns. Even though Stanford’s offense struggled, Mosley was a reliable playmaker, often getting the ball on bubble screens and intermediate routes.

JD Pickell praised Texas’ quiet approach in the transfer portal, noting that the lack of activity initially raised questions among fans. However, the decision to wait for a high-impact player like Mosley demonstrated the Longhorns’ focus on quality over quantity.

“Adding him to the mix gives Sark another weapon, and I think they’re going to be in a good position with Arch Manning to keep a good thing going on offense,” Pickell said.

“Naturally, there are a couple of positions depth-wise where we’re not where we need to be right now,” Sarkisian said earlier this month, reflecting on their need for a wide receiver. “It’s not a secret that we’ll look to the portal, but I don’t want to take a guy just for a number.”

Mosley’s arrival is a big win for Texas, especially after the team lost its top two receivers, Matthew Golden and Isaiah Bond, to the NFL.

Based on the team’s requirements, he might not step in as the immediate star they need, but his addition still strengthens the team’s receiving group. He’ll provide quarterback Arch Manning with another reliable target to work with, helping the offense grow stronger.
