‘Not Nearly as Interested’ – Buzz Around Bill Belichick Doesn’t Compare to Deion Sanders, Claims CFB Analyst

College football analysts Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman discuss the recent lack of interest surrounding Bill Belichick and the UNC Tar Heels.

Earlier this week, college football analysts Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman discussed Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels football program. While previewing the upcoming college football season and how Belichick will adjust to the college level after his storied NFL career, both highlighted the surprising lack of buzz surrounding the situation.

Belichick was announced as the next head coach of the Tar Heels in December 2024. After mutually agreeing to part ways with the New England Patriots in January 2024, he transitioned into a media role with various companies, giving fans a fresh look at his personality. Widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time, Belichick is an eight-time Super Bowl champion, six of those titles coming as a head coach.

What Did Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman Say About Bill Belichick?

Staples and Wasserman expressed their belief that the situation has not generated as much hype or excitement as they initially expected. Their discussion took place on the popular Andy & Ari On3 show, presented by On3Sports.

“I thought we would be a lot more interested in this, but I see the numbers on the columns and the videos, and people are not nearly as interested in Bill Belichick as they were in Deion [Sanders],” Staples said.

This led to a discussion about why that might be the case.

“If we theorize as to why, it’s probably because he’s not a personality. Deion is a mega personality,” Wasserman said.

“And he was also people’s favorite player. Being someone’s favorite player gives you a lot more of a connection than being someone’s favorite coach,” Staples added.

Can Bill Belichick Revitalize UNC Like Coach Prime Did With Colorado?

It will be interesting to see how quickly Belichick can adapt to the college level and whether he can build a team culture as effectively as Sanders did at Colorado. Since taking over as head coach of the Buffaloes, Sanders has been aggressive in recruiting and active in the transfer portal, bringing in key players to elevate the program.

To significantly improve the Tar Heels’ roster and overall program, Belichick will need to follow a similar approach, prioritizing recruiting and the transfer portal. His success in these areas will likely determine how quickly UNC can compete at a higher level.
