Who Votes for the Heisman? Inside the Committee That Decides College Football’s Biggest Award

Right now, there are 930 total votes in play for the 2025 award. The voting body for the Heisman Trophy can primarily be broken down into three distinct categories.

Media members account for most of the voting committee, as 870 sports journalists, broadcasters, and media personalities are set to vote this season.

Now, these 870 votes are divided evenly across six geographic regions, with exactly 145 voters in each section, namely the Far West, Mid Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, South, and Southwest. This provision is made in the voting system to avoid any regional biases.

The second voting category sees former Heisman winners vote for this prestigious award, as every living Heisman winner receives a ballot. This will account for 60 votes from the past recipients.

The fan vote is the third and smallest category of the Heisman voting system, where millions of college football fans can participate in online voting, accounting for one vote in the final tally.

Voters must select three players and rank them first, second, and third, with the scoring system awarding three points for a first-place vote, two points for second place, and one point for third place. The player who ends up with the most points is, naturally, declared the Heisman winner.

    Heisman Trophy Finalists

The Heisman Trophy ceremony is happening tonight in New York City, and one of four finalists will walk away with college football’s most prestigious award.

Tonight’s ceremony will reveal which of the four finalists, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia, Ohio State’s Julian Sayin, or Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, will be crowned as the best college football player of the 2025 campaign.

Mendoza led Indiana to an undefeated Big Ten championship and is touted to be a top choice to win this season, while Diego Pavia has been an important piece in Vanderbilt’s  10-win season.

Sayin, meanwhile, has posted the best completion percentage in the nation whilst helping Ohio State finish second in the overall CFP rankings, while Jermiyah Love averages nearly seven yards per carry while scoring 18 total touchdowns for Notre Dame this season.

Let’s now understand who gets to vote for the Heisman Trophy and how the overall voting system works for college football’s most sought-after individual award.
