Joey Aguilar’s Biggest Supporters: Inside the Lives of Jose and Lydia Aguilar
High school sweethearts Jose and Lydia Aguilar have been parents at a young age. Teenage parenthood was no walk in the park, but they endured unceasingly to take care of the family.
As a first-generation Mexican American and a lady of Puerto Rican descent, Joey had a very strong work ethic and pride in being Latino. In addition, Joey was also coached by Jose, who saw his son’s potential as a quarterback from a very early age.

The extent to which Joey overcame the odds to set records at Appalachian State University and his rise from being overlooked in high school is nothing short of a testament to grit and his parents’ unwavering support.
He is trying to be the first from his family to graduate from college, and he is encouraging future Latino athletes at Tennessee, as his family’s legacy at that school lives on.
“It’s awesome. Hispanic quarterbacks—there aren’t many out there,” Joey shared. “To go out there and represent is amazing. Especially for the younger kids, seeing a Hispanic quarterback and they’re Hispanic as well. Growing up, they can be like, ‘Dang, that’s awesome. I want to be like that one day.'”
From Underdog To Record-Breaker: Joey’s Path to Tennessee
Joey Aguilar had a stellar high school career at Freedom High School in Oakley, Calif. He threw for 5,575 yards and 59 touchdowns, but despite that, he was overlooked by major college programs. He was not deterred; he went to Diablo Valley College to improve his skills.
Luckily, it paid off, and his pitch started to take off when he transferred to Appalachian State University.
When the starting quarterback at App State was injured, Joey took the opportunity to start. In a spectacular season, he also broke multiple single-season records, including passing yards (3,757) and passing touchdowns (33).
His performance earned him the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year award and the 2023 Cure Bowl MVP.
“Growing up, I was always overlooked but always worked hard. I just had that mindset that I deserve more for myself,” Joey said, reflecting on his journey.
In December 2024, Joey briefly transferred to UCLA before moving to the University of Tennessee in April 2025. His determination and resilience continue to define his career, as he aims to make an impact both on and off the field.
