This should have been a simple question to answer, but the jersey‑number drama surrounding the New York Giants’ first‑round pick, Abdul Carter, is still unfolding. Fans will have to wait a little longer to find out which number he’ll wear on the professional stage.
Carter is expected to sit behind veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston during his rookie season. However, before he gets a chance to showcase his skills nationally, the focus remains on his jersey saga—a situation that, in some ways, feels almost comical, as Carter appears completely stuck without a number.

Abdul Carter’s Penn State Jersey Number Now Iconic
At Penn State, Carter proudly wore No. 11. It became part of his identity on the field. Naturally, fans expected him to keep that number as he stepped onto the pro stage. But there’s an unexpected twist: he hasn’t received permission to wear No. 11 in New York.
The No. 11 jersey has become a symbol of defensive greatness at Penn State. Since LaVar Arrington made it iconic in the late 1990s, only a few players have worn it, including NaVorro Bowman, Brandon Bell, Micah Parsons, and Carter. This jersey is part of what’s known as Penn State’s No. 11 tradition.

Carter embraced this legacy, becoming one of the most dominant defenders in program history. During his time with the Nittany Lions, he recorded 168 tackles, 39 tackles for loss and 22 sacks, firmly placing himself among the greats who wore No. 11.
After being drafted by the Giants, the 21‑year‑old hoped to continue wearing that number, believing in his dominance on defense. Unfortunately, the Giants retired the number in honor of quarterback Phil Simms, and they blocked Carter’s request. The Simms family also played a role in keeping the number off‑limits.
Before that, the former Lions defensive lineman considered wearing No. 56, which was retired for Giants legend Lawrence Taylor. But Taylor made it clear that wasn’t an option. “Get another number,” Taylor said. “I don’t care if it’s double zero—then make it famous.”

Meanwhile, rumors are swirling that the No. 3 overall pick is eyeing No. 23—his high school number. To make that happen, he would need permission from the Giants’ current No. 23, Anthony Johnson Jr.
Whatever the real report is, he will have a jersey before the NFL season begins.
