Which College Football Positions Receive the Most Scholarships?

The ultimate goal for most athletes is to secure a football scholarship at a prestigious university. The good news is that there are hundreds of football programs in the country that offer scholarships to talented student-athletes. But there’s a downside too—not every position gets the same number of scholarship offers.

That’s why knowing which positions are in high demand could significantly impact your chances of securing a Division I scholarship. Recently, former college football player Adam Breneman shared his thoughts on Instagram, giving real insight into how the recruiting process works.

Analyst Breaks Down Which College Football Positions Get the Most Scholarships

In his post, Breneman wrote, “Not all positions are created equal. Some spots have 3x more scholarships than others — and if you’re trying to play D1, you need to know the numbers.”

This may be one of the most important tips he has shared so far. Division I FBS teams can offer up to 105 scholarships, but coaches must use those wisely. That’s why knowing which positions get more offers can give you a big advantage.

According to Breneman, offensive linemen (OL) are in high demand. Teams usually give 12–15 scholarships to OLs. These players protect the quarterback and open up running lanes, making them a core part of any winning team.

Next in line are defensive linemen (DL) and wide receivers (WR). These positions often receive 10–12 scholarships each. DLs dominate the trenches on defense, while WRs are key to explosive offensive plays.

Defensive backs (DB) and linebackers (LB) typically receive 7-12 scholarships per team, depending on a program’s defensive scheme.

Meanwhile, special teams players, including kickers, punters, and long snappers (K/P/LS), receive the fewest scholarships—usually 1-2 per team—and often start their careers as walk-ons.

Surprisingly, quarterbacks (QB), despite being the most important position, get fewer scholarships—usually just 3-4 per team. This is because there are only a few starting and backup spots. However, getting a quarterback scholarship is highly prestigious, as teams put significant effort into finding the right talent for the role.

However, it doesn’t cover all 105 scholarship spots, but that’s not the point. Not every team will give out all scholarships. It all depends on the talent they need. If a team doesn’t find the right talent for their needs, there’s no reason to offer a scholarship.

Adam Breneman’s analysis is just an average look at which positions get more scholarships. His goal is to help athletes understand where teams tend to invest more so they can prepare from the start.
