Adrian Martinez Went From College Phenom to Star Quarterback

Born on Jan. 7, 2000, in Fresno, Calif., Martinez showed his athletic talent early on at Clovis West High School. By demonstrating versatility, he showcased excellence in both football and basketball. As a junior, Martinez passed for 2,562 yards with 25 touchdowns and rushed for 1,462 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Unfortunately, a torn labrum during a basketball game sidelined him for his senior football season. Despite this setback, his junior year earned him the Fresno Bee Football Player of the Year award.

He was regarded as a four-star prospect and the seventh-highest-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2018. Martinez initially committed to Cal. However, he then went to Tennessee before ultimately choosing the University of Nebraska.

Martinez’s tenure with the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 2018 to 2021 was marked by record-breaking performances. As a true freshman, he became the first freshman quarterback in Nebraska history to start a season opener. Throughout his four years, Martinez set multiple school records, including:

    • Career Total Offense Yards: 10,792
    • Career Total Offense Yards Per Game: 276.7
    • Career 300-Yard Total Offense Games: 19
    • Career 400-Yard Total Offense Games: 5
    • Career 250-Yard Passing Games: 16

Despite his individual success, team achievements were limited.

Martinez’s Transition to Kansas State Wildcats

In 2022, Martinez transferred to Kansas State for his final collegiate season. He led the Wildcats to a 10-4 record and a berth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Martinez’s performance earned him All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades. However, his season was curtailed by a knee injury.

Undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, Martinez signed with the Detroit Lions as a free agent on May 12, 2023. Despite a promising preseason, he was put off on August 29, 2023.

The athlete then joined the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League (UFL) on December 24, 2023. Nonetheless, his dual-threat capabilities flourished in Birmingham. He led the Stallions to a 9-1 regular-season record and clinched the USFL Conference Championship. Martinez’s stellar play was recognized with multiple accolades:

    • UFL Most Valuable Player (2024): That’s where he led the league with 528 rushing yards. That also brought him to third in passing yards at 1,750 and tied for second with 15 passing touchdowns.
    • UFL Championship Game MVP (2024): He claimed a victory over the San Antonio Brahmas in the inaugural UFL Championship Game.

His 2024 season was marked by record-setting performances. This included a four-touchdown passing game against Memphis on May 4. Alongside that, he had a 138-yard rushing game against Houston on April 27.

Martinez’s UFL success reignited NFL interest, leading to his signing with the New York Jets on July 27, 2024. Although waived on Aug. 27, he secured a spot on the practice squad, positioning himself for future opportunities in the league. As he continues to navigate the challenges of professional football, Martinez’s story serves as an inspiration.
