‘I’m Going To Coach in College Football’ — When Hall of Famer Deion Sanders Predicted His Own CFB Rise

Back in 2020, Deion Sanders predicted he would coach in college football. He made that a reality and now leads the Colorado Buffaloes to new heights.

Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, has made a significant impact on college football at multiple levels of the game. His rise to prominence was not only a result of his coaching skills but also his unshakable confidence. Sanders’ bold prediction five years ago when he stated that he would become a college head coach has come to fruition in a big way.

Deion Sanders’ Prediction Made Him Today’s Coach Prime

Deion Sanders is widely known for his self-assurance, and it was no different in 2018 when he confidently predicted his future in college football.

At the time, Sanders was a former NFL star and media personality with aspirations to transition into coaching who had set his sights on the Florida State coaching job. He even named himself a candidate for the position that eventually went to Mike Norvell.

However, Sanders was undeterred by his unsuccessful pursuit of his alma mater’s job. During an appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show” in 2020, Sanders made it clear that he would be a head coach in college football the following season.

Patrick questioned him about his interest in Florida State. Sanders responded, “Yes. I’m going to be a head coach in college football next year.”

When pressed about where that would be, Sanders confidently replied, “Somewhere. I’m that definite. I’m that assured that I am.”

Despite not securing the Florida State job, Sanders’ assertion about becoming a head coach held. In 2021, he took over as head coach of Jackson State University in Mississippi before eventually transitioning to Colorado.

Five years later, Sanders’ prediction is celebrated as a testament to the power of positive affirmation.

The Instagram page of “The Pregame Show” posted a clip from that interview, highlighting Sanders’ words to remind fans of his confidence.

“What affirmations are you speaking over your life? What are you claiming? Are you believing so much in the things you claim that you see them as if they already exist?”

Deion Sanders’ leadership at Colorado has brought remarkable financial results. In the 2024 fiscal year, the University of Colorado reported record-breaking profits, with an $8.24 million net gain. This was a significant improvement over the previous year’s $9.89 million deficit.

Deion Sanders’ Influence Beyond The Field

Sanders’ influence was a key factor in this turnaround, which was driven by strong ticket sales and merchandise revenue. Colorado’s athletic department generated approximately $142 million in revenue, easily surpassing the previous record of $117 million. The increased sales were a direct result of Sanders’ ability to create excitement and draw in fans.

The athletic department also saw a rise in operating expenses, which hit a record $132 million. This increase was largely due to higher costs associated with gameday operations, including additional security measures for sold-out home games.

Sanders’ arrival helped sell out every Colorado home game in 2023, an achievement the program had never accomplished before. The surge in fan support also translated into higher merchandise sales, further contributing to the university’s financial success.

In addition to financial success, Sanders has brought cultural and social relevance to the Colorado football program. His success is reflective of the evolving landscape of college football, where branding, recruitment, and NIL deals play a critical role.

Sanders has been at the forefront of this shift, leveraging his star power to enhance the program’s reputation.

His success on and off the field has positioned Colorado as a prime destination for high-caliber talent. Sanders’ magnetism has helped the Buffaloes recruit five-star players, further bolstering the program’s future. If Sanders can continue to build the team’s on-field play, he could raise an already surging Buffaloes program to an entirely new level.
