Academic and Sports Journey of Star Quarterback Shedeur Sanders

Sanders, born February 7, 2002, isn’t just chasing touchdowns. He’s pursuing a sociology major at the University of Colorado. Sociology explores human behavior, societal trends, and group dynamics. Not many would guess sociology is the field of study for the star quarterback.

His college football career kicked off at Jackson State in 2021. He was dazzled with 3,231 passing yards and 30 touchdowns as a freshman there. He earned the Jerry Rice Award, a first for an HBCU player.

In his sophomore year, he upped the ante. He threw for 3,732 yards and 40 touchdowns, securing the Deacon Jones Trophy. After two stellar seasons, he transferred to Colorado when his father, Deion Sanders, took the head coaching job.

At Colorado, Sanders hit the ground running. In his 2023 debut, he shattered a school record with 510 passing yards against TCU. He finished that season with 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns despite a back injury sidelining him for one game.

The Buffaloes went 4–8, but Sander’s talent shone through. Fast forward to 2024, and he elevated the team to a 9–4 record. His 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns earned him the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Sociology might seem like a backdrop to his football fame, but it aligns with his plan. The major could help him understand team chemistry or even societal issues he might tackle later.

He’s busy off the field, too. He’s inked NIL deals with Gatorade, Beats by Dre, and Nike—becoming the first college footballer to partner with the latter. Plus, he dropped a hip-hop track, “Perfect Timing,” in May 2024.
