The Arkansas Razorbacks are still in the hunt for bowl eligibility following a Week 10 loss at the hands of the Ole Miss Rebels. However, searching for a bowl game took a back seat when starting QB Taylen Green injured his leg early in the first quarter against the Rebels.
Green was later pulled after briefly returning sporting a knee sleeve against Ole Miss.
What Happened to Taylen Green?
It was a 2nd & 1 from the Ole Miss 46-yard line when Green perfectly read the Ole Miss defense and kept a read-option carry around the edge. He achieved a first down and made two defenders miss in the process.
However, when Green was tackled, it came from behind, as he juked backward into the awaiting arms of the Ole Miss defender. Green went down in an awkward position, landing on both knees with the full weight of the defender on top of him.
The ball popped loose as Green appeared in a large amount of discomfort. Though it was ruled that he was down before fumbling, he achieved the first down, but as he laid on the turf with his head face down into the grass, the collective silence from Razorbacks fans in the crowd was palpable.
He eventually got up and was helped to the sidelines, favoring his left leg significantly.
As he gingerly walked off, backup QB Malachi Singleton warmed up and eventually took over. Singleton’s first play was a QB draw, and the offense subsequently fell into the proverbial quicksand, forced to kick a field goal.
However, Singleton has plenty of experience and even led the Razorbacks in their upset victory over Tennessee.
Green returned to the action, but was pulled once again. Head coach Sam Pittman answered why Green was put back in but ultimately pulled when the game was clearly out of hand.
“We just felt like we might get him hurt worse if we put him back out there,” Pittman said.
He also stated that Green was “gimpy” and didn’t want to take any chances.
His status will be one to monitor as the Razorbacks are still on the hunt for that sixth victory to get them to bowl-eligible status.
