The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns were already on their second-string quarterback when they entered the Sun Belt Championship Game against the Marshall Thundering Herd. Down four points early on, backup QB Chandler Fields was fighting for every inch against a stout Marshall defense when disaster struck again.
Fields exited the game on the cart, putting the Cajuns’ Sun Belt Championship dreams potentially on hold.
Chandler Fields Injury Update
Fields, starting in place of the injured Ben Wooldridge, is no stranger to pushing the limits with his own body. He’s routinely found success in doing so.
On a 3rd & 12 play early in the second quarter, Fields dropped back to pass, quickly made the decision to scramble up the middle, broke right, and was tackled just short of the line to gain. However, it was the awkward finish of the tackle that immediately sent shock through Cajun fans in attendance and watching at home.

The tackle itself didn’t seem too violent, but the finish is what ultimately did the damage.
And that finish is likely what injured Fields’ left shoulder.

The body weight of the defender coming in after the play and sandwiching Fields into the ground looked as bad as it seemed. And Fields got up in clear pain and distress, walking to the sidelines with his arm hanging.
He was later seen holding his arm gingerly while exiting the field on a cart.
Daniel Beale Replaces Chandler Fields
In relief of Fields came Daniel Beale. A true freshman from Baton Rouge, Beale had attempted just two collegiate passes before being inserted into the lineup against Marshall.
He was immediately thrust into a fourth-down attempt in his action for Fields, failing to convert on a play-action scramble to his right side.
A consensus three-star recruit, Beale was the state championship at Catholic High School during his tenure in high school and had offers from Colorado State and Louisiana Tech as well.
