In the new-look Big 12, the West Virginia Mountaineers remain a familiar face as members of the conference since 2012. Neal Brown’s fifth season at the helm in Morgantown was his best, guiding the Mountaineers to a 9-4 finish and a Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory over North Carolina, 30-10.

Before embarking on their conference schedule, the Mountaineers will face two Power Four teams from the state of Pennsylvania for the second consecutive year: Penn State and Pitt. WVU lost at Penn State last fall but beat Pitt in Morgantown. It will be the third consecutive non-conference game scheduled against Pitt, with the Panthers beating the Mountaineers in 2022.
WVU’s second game of the year will be its first against the Albany Great Danes, an FCS program in Albany, New York. It will be the Great Danes’ first game against a Big 12 opponent. Jared Verse, the Los Angeles Chargers 2024 NFL Draft first-round selection at pick 19, started his career in Albany before transferring to FSU.
The Mountaineers have one conference opponent scheduled who beat them last season: the Oklahoma State Cowboys. On WVU’s homecoming, Oklahoma State won 48-34. The Cowboys have won eight of the last nine meetings against the Mountaineers.

While WVU and new Big 12 member Arizona will face each other for the first time in or out of conference, the Mountaineers face three conference foes that beat them in the last matchup in 2022 — Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State. They at least have the luxury of ending the seasons facing four other teams they beat in 2023 — Cincinnati, Baylor, UCF, and Texas Tech.
