It was the first official outing of Warren Sapp with Colorado this season as their new Pass rush coordinator. He announced in December 2023 that he was joining head coach Deion Sanders as a senior analyst of the defensive line.

Sapp has already foreshadowed his desire to coach in past NFL Network interviews and on-camera appearances in 2023.

Warren Sapp Brings Experience Amid Colorado’s Defensive Line Reload

Colorado will be looking to rework their defensive front with important transfers and in-house promotions. As Warren Sapp gets ready for another season, Jehiem Oatis could be his main weapon. The former Alabama defensive tackle was ranked as the top pickup in the portal by ESPN. Oatis arrives with SEC magnitude and efficiency, having registered 52 tackles and 1.5 sacks in his Tuscaloosa stint.

Tavian Coleman (Texas State) and Gavriel Lightfoot (Fresno State) are two other pieces that have generated buzz. The two come to Colorado with more than 70 combined career starts. Coleman has 5.5 total forced fumbles and TFLs, and Lightfoot registers as an experienced interior. The two players have introduced depth to the CU defensive line group.

Colorado is also bringing back important producers of 2024. Arden Walker, Samuel Okunlola, Keaten Wade, and Amari McNeill, who combined to make 39 sacks and led the Colorado defense last year.

The defensive group jumped from 11th in the Big 12 to 6th in total defense and they will look to continue that trend. Trent Finnegan of Denver Sports seems to agree that Sapp is moving the group in the right direction.

“The defensive line looks scarier on paper, but they will have plenty of tests throughout the season to see how much, if at all, they’ve improved from 2024.” He said.

Sapp is now on a staff that includes three NFL Hall of Famers, including Coach Prime and former NFL great Marshall Faulk. His presence seems to be an indication of Colorado having big plans to be a dominant force in the trenches, looking towards 2025.
