Who Are the Virginia Tech Football Radio Analysts?

    Mike Burnop, Football Commentator

Mike Burnop, a Virginia Tech Hall of Famer, is not only a Virginia Tech legend, he’s also a state of Virginia icon. Burnop was induced into the Virginia Tech Hall of Fame while also earning two Virginia Sportscaster of the Year awards (2019, 2023).

Burnop, who played for Virginia Tech as a tight end, once set Hokies’ single-season records in receptions and yards, records that stood for decades. Eventually, Bucky Hodges broke Burnop’s records, but the latter was induced into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.

The 2024 sports year marked Burnop’s 42nd year of calling Hokie athletics. His place in Tech record books is secured and his voice is one of the most known voices for one specific team in college football.

In addition to his duties as an analyst for football games, Burnop also calls the men’s basketball games at Virginia Tech while also hosting Tech Talk Live!, a weekly radio program that features in-depth analysis and access to the Hokie athletic programs.

    Bill Roth, Football Play-by-Play

If you haven’t heard Bill Roth call a Virginia Tech game, then you’ve missed out. His catchphrase alone is a part of college football nomenclature.

“From the blue waters of the Chesapeake Bay to the hills of Tennessee, the Virginia Tech Hokies are on the air!”

After returning to the booth in 2022, Roth has now reached a historic milestone, calling his 30th season in 2024 with the program. From 1988 to 2015, Roth serves as the football play-by-play announcer for Virginia Tech, calling the shots from such famous names such as Michael Vick, Tyrod Taylor, DeAngelo Hall, and many others during his first stint in Blacksburg.

Roth also serves as a professor in the School of Communication at Tech, helping to launch Tech’s popular SMA program (Sports Media and Analytics). He is a Virginia Sports Hall of Famer and a 12-time Virginia Sportscaster of the Year winner.

    Zach Mackey, Football Sideline Reporter

Serving as the sideline reporter for all football broadcasts, Zach Mackey is the newcomer compared to his peers on the Tech radio calls. Mackey, however, has spent time broadcasting across the country and is a legend in his own right.

A runner-up for the Bob Costas High School Play-by-Play Broadcaster of the Year back in 2013, Mackey hasn’t looked back.

With Burnop, Mackey co-hosts the Tech Talk Live! show and also calls the play-by-play action for Tech’s men’s basketball games with Roth. Mackey graduated from Iowa and spent time calling Hawkeyes games as well as a three-year stint in Bozeman with the Montana State football and basketball programs.
