The 2024 season for the Virginia Cavaliers was rocky at best. The season ended with a 5-7 record and just three wins in ACC play. Sitting 13th in the conference standings, it’s clear the Cavaliers haven’t quite cracked the code under head coach Tony Elliott.
Historically, the program has seen better days. The Cavaliers have five conference championships, one division title, and a bowl game appearance. 2025 might just be their year to get to the top of the ACC pecking order.

Now that the schedule has both opportunity and danger. There are ACC heavyweights and tricky out-of-conference wild cards. But the Cavaliers have a lot of fixing to do if they want to win. Last season, the offense was pretty bad. The game against North Carolina in 2024 is an example of this.
The Tar Heels had been gashed for 70 points by James Madison weeks prior, but when the Cavaliers played them, they only had 7 rushing yards. Quarterback Anthony Colandrea was under constant pressure and ended the day with two interceptions, including a red-zone pick-six. It was broken plays all season.
The defense wasn’t completely off the hook, either. Missed tackles, busted coverages, and poor angles gave opposing offenses life. Against North Carolina, the Cavaliers allowed 428 yards, with three first-half touchdown drives practically gift-wrapped by defensive breakdowns. The offensive line was also a weakness.
Virginia’s tackling issues were a prime reason for the loss. Missed tackles and poor pursuit angles turned short gains into big plays. Once praised for their complementary football earlier in the season, the Cavaliers now look disjointed. Each unit seemingly works against the others as the losses pile up.

And that was because most of the players, including key starters like Brian Stevens and Ty Furnish, were fighting injuries. So, where does that leave Virginia heading into 2025? Well, with a daunting mountain to climb.
If Tony Elliott and his squad can fix the red zone struggles, shore up the line, and get the quarterback room settled, they might just have a good year.
