Urban Meyer to Penn State? Apparently not happening. Many would be surprised as to why a program like Penn State could turn down a coach with a pedigree like Urban Meyer’s, a three-time national championship winner. Someone who managed to lead blue-blooded programs like Florida and Ohio State to national success.

Well, it’s all down to the thought Meyer holds regarding the new NIL market, with which he didn’t have to deal last time he was a college football coach. Apparently, the parties met, but the Nittanity Lions were unhappy about the answers provided by the coach regarding NIL. This, even though Meyer has denied any interest in the job.
However, according to Audacy’s Zach Gelb, there’s been a strong interest on his part:
“I’ve been hearing a lot about Urban Meyer and the Penn State job in the last 48 hours and just people I’ve been talking to,” Gelb said. “I’m not going to crush Urban Meyer for lying when he says ‘Hey, I don’t have any interest in coaching again.’ But I’ve talked to two sources and two sources told me that Urban Meyer had a great interest level in becoming the next head football coach at Penn State.”
But he also pointed out that the Nittany Lions are not interested:
“The reasons why those talks did break down is when they got to the topic of NIL,” Gelb explained. “Which Urban Meyer has never been a head coach during the NIL era. His plan and his answers in terms of navigating those Name Image, and Likeness waters were not viewed as satisfactory enough.”

Who Are The Favorites To Be The Next Penn State Head Coach?
- Brian Hartline (Ohio State OC): +140
- Joe Brady (Bills OC): +225
- Eli Drinkwitz (Missouri): +300
- Jeff Brohm (Louisville): +500
- Urban Meyer (Retired): +700
- Mike Elko (Texas A&M): +900
- Brian Kelly (Ex-LSU): +900
- Matt Campbell (Iowa State): +1000
As we can see, Urban Meyer is one of the favorites, but he’s nowhere near the top of that list. While it could be possible, and it wouldn’t be surprising for him to end as the Nittany Lions head coach, it seems like an unlikely outcome.
