‘He Loves That Place’ – Urban Meyer Heaps Praise on Dan Lanning in Top 3 Coaching Nod Despite No Natty Wins

Dan Lanning has only improved in his tenure with Oregon as head coach. After spending three seasons as outside linebackers coach in Georgia, Danning took over Oregon’s football program in 2022 and ever since, he has improved his record.

In his first season, his program registered a 10-3 record and also won the Holiday Bowl. The following year, he registered a 12-2 record and also won the Fiesta Bowl. Last season, the program went unbeaten in the Big Ten conference and posted a 13-1 record. They qualified for the College Football Playoff, where they were taken down by the eventual national champions, Ohio State, in the Rose Bowl.

During the latest episode of “The Triple Option” podcast, former coach Urban Meyer said Lanning is “certainly one of the top 3 coaches in college football.” However, the only thing missing in his cabinet is the national championship trophy.

“The big gold trophy, man,” Lanning said. “So I went to visit him last year — went to spring practice, talked to the team, talked to the staff, watched him behind the scenes. I think he’s certainly one of the top two or three coaches in the country right now. Love his enthusiasm. He loves Oregon — I mean, he loves that place. He’s got a niche out there.”

Urban Meyer Highlights Advantages Dan Lanning Has in Oregon

These days, recruiting is relatively easier when you have a lot of money to spend on athletes, and Dan Lanning is certainly in a good spot in that regard. Nike, the biggest sneaker giant in the country, is based in Oregon and has openly funded the program to bring it to the brink of the national championship. With so much money flowing in, Lanning can rest assured that he’ll have an upper edge when talking and securing the commitments of top recruits.

Nike was one of the things even Urban Meyer highlighted while listing the advantages Lanning has at his disposal. During the same segment, Meyer said :

“He’s got Nike. It’s a beautiful school. He’s got great facilities. I’m really excited to see this quarterback. I saw this quarterback — I made sure I watched him in high school because he was a five-star. I kept hearing about him. Talented dude, man. The only thing — you gotta go get you a crystal ball.”

Now the only thing left for Lanning to do is to lead the program to the national championship game and add one more trophy to his cabinet.
